Misha Defonseca’s Holocaust survival story is incredible, beyond belief.
At the age of seven, in Nazi-occupied Belgium, she trudged through a forest and kept herself alive by joining a pack of wolves that protected and provided her with scraps of food.
In 1997, Defonseca’s memoirs, Misha: A Memoire of the Holocaust Years, was published and became a bestseller in Europe. An eponymous 2007 French-language movie, Survivre Avec les Loups, featuring reenactments of her astonishing adventure, enhanced her image as an extraordinary survivor.

Misha and the Wolves (2021)
The film Misha and the Wolves, written and directed by Sam Hobkinson, which premiered Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival, is the dramatic tale of a woman whose Holocaust memoir took the world by storm, before a fallout with her publisher revealed an audacious deception created to hide a darker truth.
Misha: A Mémoire of the Holocaust Years, by Misha Defonseca, was first published in 1997 as a memoir telling how the author survived the Holocaust as a young Jewish girl, wandering throughout Europe in search of her parents. The book sold well in several countries and was made into a movie titled, Survivre avec les loups (Surviving with the Wolves), recalling the author’s claim that she was adopted by a pack of wolves who protected her.

It was on Holocaust Remembrance Day that Misha Defonseca chose to share her story of survival for the first time. Surrounded by friends and neighbors, she stood up at the Temple Beth Torah in Holliston, Mass., and told them—through tears—that after her Belgian parents were hauled off by the Nazis, she was placed in the care of a Catholic family who gave her a new name: Monique de Wael. Then, at the age of 7, she embarked on a trek from Belgium to Germany in search of her mother and father. Along her 1,900-mile journey, she witnessed pillaged villages and snuck in and out of the Warsaw Ghetto. When she came across a Nazi soldier attempting to rape a little girl, she swung into action, stabbing him to death with a pocketknife. As the Nazis closed in, she retreated deeper and deeper into the woods, living off entrails and worms. She was eventually adopted by a pack of wolves, who offered her warmth, companionship, and security.
