LankaWeb – Construction of South Asia's longest irrigation tunnel begins

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today (February 05) inaugurated the construction work of the 28km-long ‘Irrigation Tunnel’ which will be the longest irrigation tunnel in South Asia upon completion.
The event took place at Palugaswewa in Anuradhapura, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.
The tunnel will be built under the first phase of the North Central Province Maha Ela Project, in parallel to the ‘Waari Saubhagya’ (Irrigation Prosperity) programme to rehabilitate 5,000 tanks.
The North Central Province Maha Ela Project is being implemented as the 6th and final phase of the Mahaweli Development Scheme.
The objective of the project is to divert water from Moragahakanda and Kalu Ganga reservoirs to Rajarata.

COLOMBO, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has inaugurated the construction of an irrigation tunnel to be undertaken by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd (CSCEC), local media reported here Saturday.
President Rajapaksa on Friday laid the foundation stone at the groundbreaking ceremony for the 28 km-long irrigation tunnel which stretches from Elahera Konduruwewa to Palugaswewa Mahamigaswewa and passes through three wildlife sanctuaries.
The tunnel is part of the North Central Province Maha Ela Project to divert excess water from the Moragahakanda and Kalu Ganga reservoir. Construction is estimated to cost 244 million U.S. dollars and is financed by the Sri Lankan government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

'Waari Saubhagya' National Irrigation Programme begins

COLOMBO (News 1st): The ‘Waari Saubhagya’ National Irrigation Programme began on Friday (Feb. 05) at the Mahamgaswewa in Palugaswewa, Anuradhapura, under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Through the national programme, the government aims to renovate 5000 small irrigation systems in the country, the Ministry of Irrigation said on Friday (05).
Accordingly, 1000 regional irrigation systems will be renovated in 2021.
The ‘Waari Saubhagya’ National Programme will be carried out with the participation of the Ministry of Irrigation, Agrarian Services Department, Tri-Forces and Civil Security Department.
At the inauguration event of the ‘Waari Saubhagya’ National Programme on Friday (05), the construction of the tunnel to develop the Maha Ela in the North-Central province began under the patronage of the President.

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Department of Wildlife Conservation has taken steps to use drone technology to chase away elephants; the pilot project of this initiative is currently underway in the Naula Rathgammana area in Matale, wildlife officials said on Saturday (Jan. 02).
The pilot project is conducted together with the Sri Lanka Army Research Unit and Sri Lanka Navy, M.S.R.C. Marasinghe, the Director of Operations at the Department of Wildlife Conservation told News 1st.
Based on the success of the pilot project, plans are underway to use drone technology for operations to chase elephants in other parts of the island as well, the Director of Operations at the Wildlife Department further noted.
