The Uttarakhand Assembly may pass the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) 2024 Bill today.The Bill contains the laws relating to marriage, divorce, succession, live-in relationships, and related matters.A notable provision in the proposed UCC Bill requires live-in relationships to be registered within one month of initiation, with parental consent necessary for adults opting for such relationships.Furthermore, the Bill imposes a complete ban on child marriage, introduces a standardized divorce process, and guarantees equal property rights for women of all faiths.According to the UCC Bill, the marriageable age will be set at 18 for women and 21 for men across all communities, with marriage registration mandated for all religious ceremonies.Additionally, no divorce petition can be submitted within the first year of marriage. The Bill recognizes various marriage ceremonies, accommodating diverse religious beliefs and practices.However, the proposed UCC Bill explicitly exempts members of Scheduled Tribes and individuals safeguarded under Part XXI of the Indian Constitution from its application.The ongoing special four-day assembly session commenced on Monday.
