How TV Shows Are Moving Past the Coronavirus Pandemic

Remember the coronavirus pandemic? Some shows, faced with an unpredictable reality, prefer to put it safely in the past.

With "#PalmTreeReform," Mr. Mayor ends its wobbly first season on solid footing

It might come across as redundant to say this, considering the show’s general vibe, but “#PalmTreeReform” is quite the surreal episode of
Mr. Mayor. Where Tina Fey’s script for “Respect In The Workplace” (which remains the series’ high point) hit the sweet spot of her and Carlock’s brand of rapid-fire comedy, Robert Carlock’s script for this episode focuses specifically on their bizarre approach to comedy (and storytelling, in general). For that, “#PalmTreeReform” is an episode that’s sort of all over the place. However, that’s not a negative factor in this case. Instead, it speaks specifically to the number of devices Carlock uses to tell this episode’s story. From opening up on

Mr. Mayor recap: Season 1, Episode 3, "Brentwood Trash"

For better or for worse, the inevitable effect of there being a new Tina Fey and Robert Carlock show on the air is that it will always—especially this early into its run—be compared to Fey and Carlock’s other shows. Naturally, that means that
Mr. Mayor will always be compared to
30 Rock and
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. But it also means it will also always be compared to
Great News, even though that was actually a Tracey Wigfield project (co-executive produced by Fey and Carlock). Fey and Carlock have a very specific sense of humor and structure that they rely on, which is why you can spot a “Fey and Carlock show” from the jump.

'Mr. Mayor' Brings Comedy to City Hall – NBC Bay Area

Tina Fey and Robert Carlock Executive Produced
The show is set in Los Angeles
Ted Danson wants to be clear. His new show “Mr. Mayor” is not about politics. It’s a workplace comedy set in Los Angeles’ City Hall. And in a time where anything political is so divisive, it’s smart to make that distinction less people start picking sides before the show debuts.
Here’s hoping they give it a chance. “Mr. Mayor” is the brainchild of Tina Fey and Robert Carlock ("30 Rock"). And the whip smart writing will feel familiar to fans of that show.
