Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi’s bid to establish a new political outfit at the Coast appeared to have hit a brick wall yesterday after officials of three fringe parties refused to collapse their outfits.
After two-day negotiations, the officials rejected Mr Kingi’s proposal for a merger, insisting that they were only open to talks of forming a coalition.
The officials, who met at Mnarani Club in Kilifi, said they did not want to find themselves in a situation similar to what United Republican Party (URP) and other parties found themselves in after they folded up to join Jubilee.

Former key leaders in Western, Nyanza plotting comeback

THE STANDARD
Former UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi. [David Njaaga, Standard]
A number of former leaders from Western and Nyanza regions, some who have been in the political cold for over a decade, are plotting a comeback in 2022 General Election.
They are banking their hopes on the ongoing political realignments in the two regions and nationally.
The politicians are angling to fill the seats to be left by governors who are serving their final terms.
Such governors are Wycliffe Oparanya, (Kakamega), Sospeter Ojaamong (Busia), Cornel Rasanga (Siaya), James Ongwae (Kisii), Okoth Obado (Migori) and Cyprian Awiti (Homa Bay).
Some of the leaders aiming to try their luck in next year's General Election have been coalescing around political kingpins.

We were only at the end of our second week as freshmen at the University of Nairobi in October 1979 when they sent us home.
The previous week had been spent on registration amidst the excitement of orientation.
We had immensely enjoyed listening to Prof Joseph Donders who walked us through the motions of a rewarding life at the university. The Christian Union organized a week of coffee activities called ‘Nyam Nyams.’ Freedom was in the air.
Prof Donders taught us how to read a 600 page book in one hour and how to enjoy the nightspots of Nairobi.

This iconic song from the American rock group, R.E.M. so aptly depicts the global upheaval we are currently experiencing. The Covid-19 pandemic has unquestionably ended the world as we knew it.
A dramatic statement perhaps, but, as we emerge blinking from the darkness of lockdown into the glimmer of a dawn that promises some hope of economic recovery, it seems certain that many of the things that we took for granted in our pre-pandemic lives will never return. Or at least not in quite the same shape and form.
One of the most

Puffs of smoke rose from Western this week. What’s cooking?
First, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, a Tangatanga diehard, sent tongues wagging with this announcement he was taking a four-month break from politics. Who does that? A day is too long in politics.
Pundits attributed Barasa’s move to the failure of UDA party, the new kid on the block associated with Deputy President William Ruto, to capture Matungu and Kabuchai seats.

The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary general Francis Atwoli has caused a buzz due to the recent memes circulating online following an interview with Citizen TV news anchor Jeff Koinange.
Jeff had invited Atwoli on Wednesday, February 24, to discuss the pertinent issues facing the country among them the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI's) influence in the Mt Kenya region and the state of the nation.
During the interview, the COTU boss kept evading the question on the political aspirations of the Orange Democratic Movement party leader Raila Odinga in the coming 2022 General elections.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Raila Odinga’s elder brother Oburu Oginga has said there is nothing that can stop the former premier from working with Deputy President William Ruto in 2022.
Dr Oburu said their differences are political and not personal and therefore the two can still work together if circumstances necessitated.
On matters impeachment of the Deputy President, Oburu said this should be initiated by Jubilee Party and other parties then consider supporting it.
In an exclusive interview with KTN, Oburu dismissed allegations that Raila was losing ground, including at the Coast where he ended a four-day tour yesterday.

Intense pressure is mounting on the ‘Super Seven’ to strike a delicate balance in facilitating passage of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) while also maintaining a united front good enough to form a post-referendum government.
Despite the momentum created by the endorsement of the document by counties, there is the Deputy President William Ruto factor, who has been running a lone race, raiding rival political blocs and enjoying the benefit of a united team.

Stashed inside pickup trucks and guarded by armed militias and jihadists, every year billions of illicit cigarettes wind their way through the lawless deserts of northern Mali bound for the Sahel and North Africa.
The profits from their long journey fuel north Mali’s many armed conflicts, lining the pockets of offshoots of al-Qaida and the so-called Islamic State (IS) group, as well as local militias, and corrupt state and military officials. This violence is now spilling out across West Africa, displacing more than two million people in Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, and Niger.
Cigarettes made by one of the world’s largest tobacco companies, British American Tobacco (BAT) and distributed with the help of another major, Imperial Brands, through a company partially owned by the Malian state, dominate this dirty and dangerous trade.
