Double Mutant Of Coronavirus Fast Replacing N440K Variant In South India: Scientists

New Delhi:
The B.1.617 variant of the coronavirus, also known as the double mutant, is fast replacing the N440K variant in south India, scientists at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) said on Tuesday.
Former CCMB director Rakesh Mishra said the double mutant is now a dominant variant in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and now Telangana.
After an exhaustive analysis of 5,000 variants earlier this year, the CCMB had found that N440K is spreading a lot more in the southern states compared to the other variants.

BHUBANESWAR :  With emergence of a new and more virulent strain (N440K) of coronavirus in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Odisha government on Tuesday imposed stricter measures in the bordering districts to monitor flow of people from both the states. Anyone coming to Odisha from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana by personal or hired vehicle, trains and flights will have to undergo mandatory institutional quarantine for 14 days in cluster temporary medical centres (TMCs).

No need to panic over N440K variant of COVID-19, says expert

Express News Service
VIJAYAWADA: There is no need for people to panic over the reports that the N440K variant of Covid-19 is more virulent than other known variants of coronavirus, experts noted.
The N440K variant is the reason for the sharp spike in new infections in Andhra Pradesh in last few weeks.
Speaking to
The New Indian Express, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) Advisor Rakesh Mishra said the N440K strain, which was found in 20-30 per cent of samples in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Telangana will fade away in the coming weeks.

N440K mutant could reinfect recovered Covid-19 persons: DAK

N440K mutant could reinfect recovered Covid-19 persons: DAK
By KNS
Apr 24, 2021
Srinagar, Apr 24 (KNS): With the detection of N440K mutant in Kashmir, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Saturday said people who have recovered from Covid-19 could be reinfected with the mutated strain of the novel coronavirus.
“Those who have got Covid-19 infection could get sick again with the new variant,” said DAK President and influenza expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan.
“The N440K mutant that is dominant in some of the Indian states has found its way into the valley,” he said.
Quoting research conducted by the Kurnool Medical College in Andhra Pradesh, Dr Nisar said N440K variant can escape the immune response and can cause reinfection.

Is 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' Holding Up India's Genome Sequencing Program?

Is 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' Holding Up India's Genome Sequencing Program?
India's newly launched programme to widely and rapidly sequence genomes of the novel coronavirus has already run into major hurdles.

Bengaluru: Rakesh Mishra, the director of Hyderabad’s Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), is frustrated. CCMB has been sequencing SARS-CoV-2 viral genomes since the COVID-19 pandemic began – initially as part of its own research program and since December 2020 as part of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), a group of ten labs the government put together to ramp up sequencing across to India.
To do its work, Mishra’s team needs specialised plastic containers and reagents that go into sequencing machines. But buying them has become needlessly complicated in the last year, taking time away from his lab’s core jobs, according to Mishra.
