Periods at 7? Docs report spike in 'precocious puberty' | India News

Last year’s lockdown proved to be a life changing experience for seven-year-old Shanvi* and her parents who live in Delhi. The little girl started undergoing bodily changes associated with puberty, like breast enlargement and sprouting of body hair. Alarmed, Shanvi’s mother consulted a specialist who got a battery of tests and an MRI done. The diagnosis was precocious puberty. In India, a healthy puberty starts between 11 and 12 for girls. But if puberty hits before the age of 8 in girls and 9 in boys, it’s called precocious puberty.
Paediatricians are reporting an increase in the number of cases of precocious puberty (PP) in the past year or so. Some of them feel this could be an effect of the lockdown which saw kids holed up in their homes for months, lonely, gaining weight and eating unhealthy food. Dr Vaishakhi Rustagi, paediatric endocrinologist in Delhi, said that between June 2020 and Feb 2021 she saw 67 cases of PP. “Before Covid, I would see about 25 cases of PP in a year. I think it’s the stress of the pandemic that is causing this rise. Stress causes hormonal imbalance,” said Rustagi who consults at Max hospital, Shalimar Bagh and Patparganj, Delhi.

India needs to innovate and play a larger role in vaccine distribution. First, it must try harder to inoculate more of its citizens as quickly as possible and simultaneously demonstrate its soft power by supplying more and more vaccines to the rest of the world.
A month and a half after Covid-19 vaccination was rolled out in India, the government has allowed private hospitals to enter what was hitherto a no-go zone: vaccination on payment basis.

Inoculation drive to continue on Tuesday too as many people were eager to get the shot
The second phase of COVID-19 vaccination for all senior citizens and those aged above 45 with comorbidities, which began on Monday, was marred by technical glitches on the CoWIN portal. As a result, only 1,576 senior citizens and 374 persons above 45 years with comorbidities were vaccinated on day one in Karnataka.
The health department, which earlier decided to administer the vaccine only on alternate days, has now said the inoculation drive will continue on Tuesday too as many people were eager to get the shot.

Apart from his heart, the donor's liver, lungs, and kidneys were also donated.
A 58-year-old man in Bengaluru got a new lease of life on Wednesday after the traffic police facilitated a green corridor during peak hours to enable a heart transplant surgery on time.
According to the police, the heart was transported from Aster RV Hospital in JP Nagar 1st Phase to Narayana Health City (NHC) in Bommasandra within 23 minutes. “A distance of 20 kilometres was covered between 11.23 am and 11.46 am by creating a green corridor throughout the route,” an officer added.
A spokesperson of NHC said that the patient who received the heart underwent the transplant within minutes. “As the patient’s condition could only be improved through a heart transplant, doctors requested him to register at Jeevasarthake (a state-run body which coordinates organ donation). Fortunately, he received a matching heart today. The transplant surgery has been successful and the patient is recovering,” the spokesperson said.

Bengaluru sees more heart attacks as Covid-19 pandemic bites

Card image cap

updated: Sep 29 2020, 00:54 ist
Doctors have reported a 30% surge in heart attack cases in Bengaluru in the last two months, possibly related to factors like mental stress, economic difficulties, sedentary lifestyle, bad diet and other challenges imposed by the lockdown.
Many of the patients have also been delaying hospital visits due to fear of contracting Covid-19 and therefore having a complicated course of recovery due to lack of timely treatment.
Dr Sreekanth Shetty, Interventional Cardiology, Sakra World Hospital, said, "As mental stress, frustration and insecurities among people rise due to financial anxiety, job loss, salary cuts, unregulated working hours, etc., we are witnessing a surge in heart attack cases. This is due to pandemic-induced stress on people.”

BENGALURU: Garima Kalita's ordeal started when she was diagnosed with head and neck cancer (fibromyxoid sarcoma), when she was 1 year, 9 months old, at the Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Centre in Narayana Health City here.
The 13-year-old from Assam had a relentlessly growing pediatric tumour which blocked her maxilla (upper jaw), nose and nasal cavity, forcing her to breathe with her mouth. Symptoms included repeated bleeding from the nose, and it also affected her overall growth.
"Removing the tumour, called debulking, was done in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Unfortunately, in 2017, the disease recurred more aggressively, with close proximity  to intracranial contents or skull region. This affected her right eye, skull base, and extended to the dura which is the outermost cover of the brain. The eye had to be removed when she was 7 years old," said Dr Vijay Pillai, consultant and chief, Head and Neck Surgical Oncology, at Narayana Hospital.

Bengaluru :
Eight-month-old Pakistani infant Rayan has become the youngest bone marrow donor in India by donating healthy bone marrow stem cells to his elder sister, who underwent successful transplant at a city hospital in Bengaluru.
The two-and-a-half-year-old Zeenia, hailing from Sahiwal in Pakistan, was suffering from Hemaphagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare disease in which bone marrow produces some abnormal cells which eat away the normal cells, resulting in high fever, low blood counts, liver and spleen enlargement, doctors said.

Healthcare and medical education: Blighted vision
India has one of the lowest numbers of both beds and doctors per 1,000 people
PTI
The government has finally been stirred and shaken by the horrific exposure of the abject health facilities in the country. This was thanks to the brimming over of all major healthcare centres in epidemic centres in India. All media houses covered the terrible state of India’s medicare.
The shameful HDI scores that the World Bank’s UNDP came up with (http://www.asiaconverge.com/2020/05/poor-education-kills-million-of-children-each-year/) and the embarrassingly low ranking of India on the Human Capital Index did little to galvanise the government to improve its health facilities. As pointed out earlier, India has one of the lowest numbers of both beds and doctors per 1000 people (see chart). Even Pakistan has a better score on these parameters.
