Arguing that there is growing evidence that SARS-CoV-2 could spread through aerosols ‒ tiny droplets that can remain suspended in the air for hours in closed spaces — researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) say aerosols generated during surgeries and out-patient procedures can be risky to healthcare workers.
To investigate how aerosols are generated during routine eye procedures, doctors at Narayana Nethralaya in Bengaluru, collaborated with IISc researchers. The team used high-speed imaging and aerodynamic models to visualise the generation of droplets during procedures such as cataract and LASIK surgeries. And, the IISc team says similar studies are also planned for orthopaedic and heart surgeries, says Basu.

India’s digital contact tracing app is controlling the behaviour of millions. One evening in the first week of May, Jyoti Bandooni, left her home for her weekend grocery run at the nearby supermarket. For Bandooni, 24, who lives with her parents in suburban Delhi and works in events management, it had become second nature to go shopping after six weeks of lockdown. But this time, her parents were worried sick.
Just that evening, on May 3, police officials in the Noida region had passed new orders giving them to fine people up to Rs. 1000 (£11) or put people in jail for six months if they were found without the government’s Aarogya Setu contact tracing app installed on their smartphones.

BENGALURU: Don’t touch your eyes. For, the coronavirus can spread through eyes too. While facial masks and sanitisers are mandatory as a preventive measure, ophthalmologists in the city point out the need for wearing glasses to reduce the risk of the virus entering into the eyes. Dr Bhujang Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Nethralaya, told
The New Sunday Express,
“According to studies, people touch their face about 20 times in an hour, knowingly or unknowingly. When a person touches an affected surface and then touches the eyes or the face, the virus can enter the body. With spectacles, one can prevent virus droplets from coming in contact with eyes. Move aimed at bridging the gap between demand and supply of corneas
To promote eye donation and bridge the huge gap between demand and supply of corneas, the Health Department is set to start eye collection centres in district hospitals soon.
Increasing the number of eye donations is crucial as corneal blindness can be treated only through transplantation from eye donations as there is no substitute for human tissue.
Although, an average of 57,000 eyes are collected across India annually, there are approximately 15 lakh corneal blind people who are in need of transplant in the country. Moreover, every year, nearly 20,000 people are detected with corneal blindness, according to the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment.
