Tamil orator Nellai Kannan was arrested on Wednesday after he was accused of making provocative comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, PTI reported. A police team held Kannan from Perambalur district, nearly 300 km from Chennai.
This came hours after Bharatiya Janata Party activists, led by senior state party leaders such as H Raja, La Ganesan, Pon Radhakrishnan and CP Radhakrishnan, staged a demonstration in Chennai demanding his arrest.
On Tuesday, Kannan was booked by Tirunelveli city police for allegedly making the comments. Kannan had made the remarks at an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act rally organised by the Social Democratic Party of India on Sunday. “There is one guy called Amit Shah. [Modi] is the Prime Minister but [Amit Shah] is his brains,” he had said. “If Amit Shah is finished off then Modi is finished too. But none of you are finishing it. I keep thinking you all will do something.”

A Tamil orator, who allegedly made provocative remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah last week was arrested and produced before a court in Tirunelveli on Thursday, which remanded him to judicial custody for 12 days.
Hours after Nellai Kannan was taken into custody last night by Perambalur District police, he was picked up by Tirunelveli police personnel.
They brought him to Tirunelveli, about 620 km from here and produced before a judicial magistrate court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
"He will have to be produced in court on January 13. Kannan has been directed to be taken to Madurai prison," a Tirunelveli district police official told PTI.

"None should be criticised personally": Puducherry CM


Amid demand for arrest of a Tamil orator for alleged provocative remarks against the Prime Minister and others, Puducherry Chief Minister and senior Congress leader V Narayanasamy on Wednesday said making personal comments would not be civilised approach.
He was responding to a question from reporters on his views about the 'provocative' remarks by Tamil writer and orator Nellai Kannan at a recent anti-CAA meeting organised by the Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI) in Tirunelveli in neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
"One should not be criticised personally while there is liberty for one to comment on the basis of policies," Naryanasamy said adding making personal comments would not be "a civilised approach".

Chennai, Jan 01: The noted Tamil orator and former Congress leader Nellai Kannan was arrested by the Tamil Nadu Police on the New Year Eve on Wednesday after the state BJP staged a protest demanding action over his alleged provocative remarks against the Prime Minister, Home Minister Amit Shah and others.

On Wednesday evening the arrest of the Tamil orator was confirmed by the police personnel of the Tirunelveli police division.
Reportedly, it seems pressure had mounted on the police after the BJP staged a protest and gave them an ultimatum to arrest Kannan by Thursday evening.

A Tamil orator has courted controversy for making 'provocative' remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah at an anti-CAA protest meeting held by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI).
The Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP filed a police complaint seeking action against Nellai Kannan, who is also a Tamil writer, as a video of his speech at the meet in Tirunelveli on Saturday went viral on social media. Kannan was speaking at the event, along with Velmurugan of the Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi and Nellai Mubarak, state chief of the SDPI.

The Tirunelveli City police, on Tuesday, booked Tamil orator Nellai Kannan for his ‘provocative’ remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a rally in the city.
Confirming the FIR, S Saravanan, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City told TNM that an FIR has been registered against Nellai Kannan based on a complaint lodged by BJP District President (Tirunelveli) Daya Shankar on Monday. Nellai Kannan has been booked under 504 [Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace], 505(1)(b) [with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquility], and 505 (2) [statements which create or promote enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes] of the IPC.
