Mottisfont to display stunning Ladybird book watercolours

EIGHTEEN original watercolours, created by one of Britain’s best-known wildlife artists for Ladybird’s much-loved illustrated non-fiction book What to Look For in Summer, will be on show at the National Trust’s Mottisfont this summer.
First published in 1960, Charles Tunnicliffe’s instantly recognisable artworks capture the landscapes, plants and wildlife of a summer season in the British countryside - swallows swooping over farmland on the hunt for insects, a water vole hiding on a river’s edge, an adder basking on sun-warmed dunes.
For decades, these exquisitely detailed scenes gave thousands of children the opportunity to learn more about the natural world around them. In ‘What to Look For in Summer’, the onlooker is drawn into a ‘hidden’ world of wildlife activity – a hedgehog on a twilight ramble for food, sea urchins and star fish lurking beneath a rock pool’s surface.

Celebrate 60 years of Ladybird book series at Mottisfont Summer Exhibition

The event takes place between 24 July and 5 September and will host various indoor and outdoor exhibitions.
`A British Summerscape` exhibition will showcase illustrations from `What To Look For In Summer` by well-known wildlife artist and author Charles Tunnicliffe who originally published the illustrated, non-fiction book in 1960 about all things summer
In the gallery space, the illustrations will be blown up to cover the walls and allow visitors to immerse in the details of the landscapes.
Outside in the gardens, the `Sights and Sounds of Summer` exhibition will host artist Natasha Durley who has created a contemporary, digital version of the 1960s illustrations to bring a vibrant, new life to the original works of Tunnicliffe.

What To Look For series by Ladybird Books became an instant classic when it was released in the late 50s and early 60s, and still today, seeing the pages illustrated by naturalistic painter Charles Tunnicliffe stirs nostalgia abound. So it’s fair to say there was some pressure on Somerset-based illustrator Natasha Durley to “measure up” to these iconic titles when she was asked to refresh the non-fiction children’s series for a modern audience. But there was a more important subject at hand: how to update the books, not just stylistically, but in content. While the books still teach kids about nature through the seasons, they also now explore how these seasons have changed since the original titles were made.

How Ladybird's iconic nature books were updated for a new generation

In the 1950s, Ladybird’s What to Look for series launched with a playful look at spring and autumn. The season-inspired books were written by E.L. Grant Watson and illustrated by painter Charles Tunnicliffe, aiming to show children the changing events in the four seasons across the UK.
The series has now been revived for the first time in 60 years by Ladybird, Penguin’s design-led children’s imprint. But in those intervening years, plenty has changed in the UK. Urbanisation and climate change has shifted the natural landscape, and the population itself looks very different.

Now, more than 60 years later, Ladybird Books is publishing a new series under the same title, written by Elizabeth Jenner and illustrated by Natasha Durley. Like the originals, they aim to inspire budding young naturalists to learn more about the wild creatures they might see during the different seasons.
Publishing director Shannon Cullen aims to build on Ladybird’s famous brand, whose books sold in their millions. “We’re currently witnessing a trend towards exploring outside as an antidote to screen time. We wanted to pay homage to our heritage by reimagining this series for a new generation of children.”
