More than 1,500 people have died with Covid-19 in nursing homes in the Republic of Ireland, the Oireachtas Health Committee has heard.
A total of 1,543 staff and residents in care homes have lost their lives during the pandemic - 369 in the last month alone.
During the third wave of the pandemic, the number of Covid-19 outbreaks in nursing homes has increased fivefold, from 34 in mid-December to 193 by the end of January. ....

Covid death toll in nursing homes passes 1,500, with 369 in January alone


More than 1,500 people have died with Covid-19 in nursing homes in Ireland, the Oireachtas Health Committee has heard.
A total of 1,543 staff and residents in care homes have lost their lives during the pandemic – 369 in the last month alone.
During the third wave of the pandemic, the number of Covid-19 outbreaks in nursing homes has increased fivefold, from 34 in mid-December to 193 by the end of January.
Some 81% of all coronavirus-linked deaths in healthcare settings in Ireland have been in nursing homes.
A total of 4,300 positive cases were recorded in nursing homes during January, 37% of them healthcare workers.
Questions were raised about the rollout of vaccines in nursing homes by the chief executive of Nursing Homes Ireland, Tadhg Daly. ....

Record 101 deaths due to Covid-19 reported in Ireland


An additional 879 new cases of the virus were also confirmed on Tuesday.
Statement from the National Public Health Emergency Team@hpscireland has today been notified of 101 additional deaths related to #COVID19.

The Department of Health said 83 of the deaths occurred in January and 18 occurred in February.
The median age of those who died is 85 years, and the age range was 19-103 years.
In total, there has been a total of 3,418 Covid-19 deaths since the outbreak of the disease.
Chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan said: “The high mortality we are experiencing as a country at the moment is related to the surge of infection we saw several weeks ago, and the hospitalisations and admissions to ICU that followed as a direct result. ....
