(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) yesterday announced the approval of $958,096 in grants for seven wildlife habitat projects through the Illinois Habitat Fund Special Wildlife Funds Grant Program. The program, funded by the sale of habitat stamps to hunters, provides for enhancing game and non-game wildlife habitat through projects developed by not-for-profit groups and governmental entities. With some of the funds going to the Quail & Upland Game Alliance, the Forest Preserve District of Will County, and to the National Great Rivers Research & Education Center along with Lewis & Clark Community College, over $100,000 has been awarded to Pheasants Forever for a project to hire three fulltime biologists to provide conservation technical assistance for the restoration of improved habitat on state-owned and private lands totaling approximately 20,000 acres of habitat restoration. This will help with projects in 17 downstate counties, including those in Marion, Clay, Jefferson, Hamilton, White, Wayne, Richland, Lawrence, Edwards, Wabash, and seven other counties. PONTOON BEACH — Madison County Transit has launched the MCT Trails Commemorative Tree & Bench Program.
The new program provides way for residents and trail users to purchase a tree or bench to be placed along an MCT trail to honor a loved one, or recognize an organization, civic group or business.
The MCT trail system includes nine major trails spanning 137 miles, ranging from trails through old-growth forest and unsurpassed views of the Mississippi River, to urban trails connecting parks to outside areas.
“For years we’ve heard from trail users who want to make a contribution to the MCT Trails while commemorating a loved one or an organization,” said MCT Managing Director SJ Morrison. “This program allows residents to become more engaged with the MCT Trails, while providing funds for trail amenities such as benches and trees, which have also been requested.”
