DNA tests help a great deal in diagnosing genetic disorders and diseases transmitted genetically, former Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University Pramod Gai has said.
He was inaugurating ‘DNA testing’ organised as part of National Science Day at Dharwad Regional Science Centre in Dharwad on Tuesday.
Prof. Gai said as it had already been established, the human body had thousands of cells and some people inherited genetic disorders from parents. DNA tests could identify such diseases or disorders, he said.
He said it had now been established after diagnosing human body cells through DNA tests that diseases inherited through blood relationships were more. And identifying diseases was comparatively easier now with advent of technology, he said.

India marks a brilliant tradition in science
India observes February 28 as National Science Day. It commemorates C V Raman’s discovery of the scattering of light, later named as the Raman effect after him.
For this he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, the first Asian to win it in science. We may remember that the first Asian to be awarded any Nobel Prize was also an Indian, Rabindranath Tagore, who won it for Literature in 1913.
Born in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu in 1888, Raman showed signs of precocity and genius from childhood. He passed his matriculation at the age of 11, graduated from Presidency College, Madras, at 16, obtained his Masters in another two years, and, in 1917, before he was 30, became the first Palit Professor of Physics at the Rajabazar Science College, University of Calcutta.

Young Emerging Scientists Interact With Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Mar 31, 2021
In his address, Gurudev spoke about the natural temperament for science in every child, and how drawing from this fact, the texts like Upanishads (ancient Vedic texts containing rich wisdom and knowledge of material and spiritual sciences) started with questions or enquiries, and encouraged people to ask questions. He mentioned that in the ancient times, science and spirituality were never in conflict in the east, unlike in the occident. Gurudev cited an example from the Upanishads of a child going to his father and asking about the Brahman. Step by step, the father nudges the son to find the answer through analysis of assumptions and then coming to conclusions, this being the pedagogy of ancient systems of knowledge, something that is common with modern sciences.
