Press Release – Forest And Bird
New Zealand’s peat wetlands are more powerful than tropical forests at absorbing carbon.
For World Wetlands Day today, Forest & Bird is releasing regional data to show wetlands are our secret resource in working to mitigate the effects of climate change.
“The Government needs to introduce a plan to protect and recharge Aotearoa’s wetlands,” says Forest & Bird freshwater advocate Annabeth Cohen.
“Only about 10 percent of our historic wetlands remain, and the few wetlands left are dwindling every day to make room for pasture or urban development.”
“If we save every remaining wetland, and double what we’ve got, there could be great gains for our wellbeing and for our climate goals.”

New tour explores the mysterious life of longfin tuna

The 30-kilometre drive, on sealed roads, includes several stops with short, easy walks.
The trust said the “Tuna Hikoi”, or “Eel Journey” will help families explore the district, learn about native eels and their habitats, and compete for prizes.
There were two species of eel, longfin and shortfin.
The tuna hold special significance for Ngāti Apakura, as kuia Hazel Wander explained.
”Apakura was a tohunga of the tuna, and so tuna are part of our identity.
Paul Gay/Stuff
“The wetlands are crucial for the survival of the tuna.
“When the tuna are healthy, we know the water is healthy, and that’s a good environmental indicator for us to look for.”

National Wetland Trust opens walkway and pontoon at Lake Rotopiko open wetland to public

Manaia and Scarlet hope the lake’s restoration will encourage more Kiwis to visit the wetland.
“When I reflect back to my time when I was a young boy, there were no PlayStations, no digital devices … we would spend hours at the creek, learning about nature and ultimately about science.”
Lake Rotopiko, also known as Serpentine Lakes, is next to State Highway 3, near Ōhaupō, between Hamilton and Te Awamutu.
It is one of 16 significant peat lakes in the Waipā district and is now surrounded by a 3km predator-proof fence.
The new pontoon and lake circuit walkway cost about $200,000, supported by funders, the Lottery Grants Board, Waipā District Council, WEL Energy Trust, Trust Waikato, Stout Trust and Waikato Forest and Bird.
