Surabaya, Indonesia – Up until Sunday afternoon, Winny Widayanti was still trying to contact her husband, 45-year-old Colonel Harry Setiawan – one of the 53 crewmen on board the Indonesian submarine KRI Nanggala-402.
She took pictures of her husband’s friends who came to their house and sent them to him, and continued to send updates about their children, even though the messages were never returned.

Indonesia Promotes Crew of Missing Submarine Who Are Presumed Dead

After a days-long search, Indonesian officials over the weekend declared the submarine lost and said everyone on board was presumed dead. On Monday, the country honored the 53 with posthumous promotion.
"For the dedication and sacrifice of these 53 soldiers, the state will give awards for promotion to one level higher and a sign of honor for the Bintang Jalasena," President Joko Widodo wrote in a tweet.
A submarine owned by Indonesia, the same model as the one that went missing.
