(Fremont, NE) -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is calling for an investigation to be launched after they say tens of thousands of chickens were not given food and water, leading to the deaths of over 1,000 birds.
In a press release, PETA said they got U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that showed that roughly 30,500 chickens were held in, "severely crowded crates on trucks overnight without food or water at Lincoln Premium Poultry near Fremont." PETA claimed in the release that 1,622 chickens were found dead the next day as a result.
Monday morning, PETA sent a letter to Dodge County Attorney Paul J. Vaughan requesting a criminal probe and for charges to e filed under Nebraska’s livestock neglect law. PETA states that Lincoln Premium Poultry exclusively supplies Costco stores.

Two injured in Monday morning crash on West Maple

By Julia Bertino
(Omaha, NE) -- Two people are injured in a crash near 111th and Maple.
Omaha Police say just before 10:00 Monday morning, officers were called to the area for a reported crash with injuries. OPD says an eastbound Nissan Altima failed to yield as it attempted to turn northbound onto Emmett from West Maple. Investigators say the Nissan was then hit by a westbound Jeep Cherokee. Police say people in both vehicles were transported to Bergan Mercy.
OPD says the driver of the Nissan, 41 year old Narissa Scales, was not wearing a seat belt and is being treated for a life-threatening, critical head injury. The driver of the Jeep, Moises Morales, was transported with a serious head injury.

Crews Give the 'All Clear' After Downtown Omaha Explosion

Police initially reported a fire had broken out near 17th and Capitol streets.
Omaha Police Sgt. Jason Menning tweeted the fire was started by a power transformer used by the Omaha Public Power District.
At 17th and Capitol is the Doubletree Hotel and First National Bank.
Omaha Scanner posted to Facebook saying security footage from First National Bank caught the moment on camera, and a security guard says he heard the explosion then saw black smoke.
They say crews continued reporting explosions once they arrived on scene.
The Omaha Fire Department's Acting Battalion Chief Mickey McLaughlin told WOWT-TV 6 News they're unsure what caused the transformer to explode, but says it could be old electrical equipment.
