Ivan Van der Walt Named Chair of the U.S. Chamber's U.S.-Mexico Economic Council

WASHINGTON, D.C.- The U.S. Chamber’s U.S.-Mexico Economic Council (USMXECO) is pleased to welcome Ivan Van der Walt, Chief Executive Officer of Mexico Pacific, as Chair of the USMXECO and Co-Chair of the U.S.-Mexico CEO Dialogue. He succeeds former Chair Pat Ottensmeyer, a prominent North American rail industry executive who had served as President and CEO of Kansas City Southern from 2015 until the completion of the merger creating Canadian Pacific Kansas City in 2023.  In his role as Chair of the USMXECO, Van der Walt will preside over the U.S.-Mexico CEO Dialogue, alongside the Mexican Co-Chair, Guillermo Vogel, Vice Chairman of the Board of Tenaris. Van der Walt is joined by USMXECO Vice Chair Pat D’Eramo, CEO of Martinrea International, a recognized leader in the automotive industry.   In 2013, the Chamber and the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial (CCE) initiated the CEO Dialogue, serving as the business counterpart to the U.S.-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue (HLED). This platform facilitates high-level exchanges between public officials and business leaders dedicated to enhancing the bilateral economic relationship and bolstering North American competitiveness, thereby offering a channel for public policy recommendations on trade and investment priorities. “The U.S.-Mexico Economic Council is fortunate to be able to count on the leadership of Ivan, whose decades of vision, leadership, and accomplishment in the global energy industry have led to his now overseeing the development of major energy infrastructure that constitutes the largest private investment in Mexico,” said Neil Herrington, U.S. Chamber Senior Vice President for the Americas. “Mexico Pacific’s commitment to building lasting partnerships in both the U.S. and Mexico will result in the export of cleaner and more affordable U.S.-sourced natural gas to meet the world’s energy security needs, and symbolizes the enhanced economic integration between our two countries that CEO Dialogue has prioritized since its inception.” “I am honored to be appointed Chair of the U.S.-Mexico Economic Council at a pivotal time in the bilateral relationship between the United States and Mexico, and to have the opportunity to cultivate meaningful engagement among business and government leaders of the two countries,” said Van der Walt. “In our energy infrastructure industry, and in numerous other sectors in which our Council is most active, we firmly believe in the strategic importance of enabling significant, long-term investments that position North America as a region of excellence. I am excited to continue collaborating with partners in the U.S. and Mexico, leveraging our countries’ tremendous resources and capabilities to promote development, strengthen trade in today’s rapidly evolving global marketplace, and enhance the prosperity of future generations.” Van der Walt has over 30 years of international LNG and energy leadership experience, including c-suite roles in both publicly listed and privately held energy companies. As an Operating Partner of Quantum Energy Group, the principal investor in Mexico Pacific, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the company in December 2022. Headquartered in Houston, Quantum is one of the most significant energy-focused private equity firms in the United States, investing primarily in the energy services and decarbonization sectors in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. Prior to joining Quantum, Van der Walt served as Chief Operating Officer of NextDecade Corporation, where he developed the Rio Grande LNG project and established the NEXT Carbon Solutions business. He has held senior roles with Chicago Bridge & Iron (now McDermott) and Chevron Corporation, and previously served as CEO of the Australasian division of the KNM Group. Throughout his career, Van der Walt has held leadership positions in numerous LNG projects around the world. He has overseen the successful design, construction, and start-up of 12 LNG trains representing more than 60 mtpa of LNG production capacity, as well as multiple international pipelines. He is a co-author of multiple patents covering LNG processing, power generation, carbon capture, CO2 storage, and hydrogen generation and utilization. The USMXECO, under the corporate leadership of Mexico Pacific and Martinrea, will continue to make significant contributions to the U.S.-Mexico relationship, working with both governments to boost economic growth and increase trade and investment.

Sarah Aiosa Named New Chair of the U.S. Chamber's U.S.-Colombia Business Council

Washington, D.C. – On the margins of the U.S. Chamber’s U.S.-Colombia Business Council (USCBC)’s 2023 Annual Meeting on November 1, the USCBC’s board of directors ushered in new leadership for the 2024-2025 period. It was announced that Sarah M. Aiosa, Senior Vice President and President, Latin America, at MSD (known as Merck & Co. Inc, in the U.S. and Canada) will be assuming the role of Chair of the USCBC. She will be joined by Karim Lesina, Executive Vice President and Chief External Affairs Officer of Millicom (Tigo), who will serve as Vice Chair. They will succeed current Chair Mauricio Ramos, Chief Executive Officer & Interim Chairman of the Board of Millicom, and Vice Chair Richard Mullen, Chief Executive Officer of Drummond Company, Inc. The Chamber and its members founded the USCBC in 2017 to foster the strongest possible bilateral relationship between the United States and Colombia, and it is proud to represent the top U.S. investors in Colombia. The Chamber has long supported and worked with both governments to promote strong commercial and economic ties with Colombia. U.S. foreign direct investment in Colombia exceeds US$8 billion, with more than 600 U.S.-owned firms contributing over 107,000 direct jobs and 350,000 indirect jobs to the country. "On behalf of the U.S.-Colombia Business Council and our members, we are excited to count on Sarah Aiosa’s leadership to elevate the importance of the bilateral relationship and impact of the U.S. business community.  Sarah is a recognized leader and changemaker, committed to leveraging the power of public-private partnerships to meet the region’s health needs. We are also fortunate to be able to work with Karim Lesina, who brings a proven track record of accomplishment in the bilateral economic relationship. We look forward to collaborating with Sarah and Karim to execute their vision for the Council's future--one anchored by optimism, opportunity, and solutions driven by enhanced public-private partnerships," said U.S. Chamber Senior Vice President of the Americas Neil Herrington. Since 2023, MSD has served as Chair of the USCBC’s Health Working Group; it was in this capacity that MSD joined the USCBC and the Chamber’s Global Initiative on Health and the Economy (GIHE)’s forum in Bogota, Colombia, on August 10 to advance public-private partnerships as a tool to strengthen the health of communities and build a more sustainable and resilient health system. With 75 years of presence in Colombia, MSD has contributed to the well-being and sustainable development of communities through programs and initiatives such as MSD for Mothers and the Grants & Donations program. “I am honored to assume the role of Chair of the Board of Directors of the USCBC for the 2024-2025 period. This opportunity fills me with enthusiasm and commitment as we strive to further enhance the bilateral commercial ties between the United States and Colombia. I pledge to leverage this important position to foster stronger public-private collaborations, economic partnerships, and drive mutual prosperity. Together, we will continue to strengthen the bonds between our nations and actively work toward the expansion of the U.S. private sector footprint in Colombia. I look forward to leading our collective efforts for a more prosperous future, so people in Colombia can live better lives,” said Aiosa. Aiosa has served as SVP and President, Latin America for MSD since February 1, 2022. In her current role, she sets the strategic direction and oversees the P&L and pharmaceutical operations in Human Health across all Latin American subsidiaries encompassing nearly 5,000 employees in more than 30 markets. Sarah also serves on the Board of Directors for the Council of the Americas, and as President and Chair of FIFARMA, the Latin American Federation of the Pharmaceutical Industry. In 2022, she was recognized on Diversity Woman Magazine's Power 100 List, and in 2023 she was recognized as one of the 50 Most Powerful Latinas by ALPFA, the Association of Latino Professionals for America.  The USCBC, led by MSD, will continue to bolster two-way trade ties and public-private collaboration, including fostering the development of a resilient healthcare system through policies that promote innovation, competitiveness, investment, and the adoption of technology.

Three years after new North American trade pact, optimism is rising for US and Mexican workers

To President Donald Trump, America’s trade relationship with Mexico was intolerable. He seethed over the U.S. trade deficit and the shuttered factories in America's heartland. “No longer,’’ he vowed six years ago, “are we going to allow other countries to break the rules, to steal our jobs and drain our wealth.”
