Eurovision! A DutchNews guide - DutchNews.nl

Although nobody could be as rude as British television commentator Terry Wogan used to be, the Dutch are going to take a stab this year as they present the Eurovision Song Contest from Rotterdam.
For those who don’t remember the epic moment when Duncan Laurence sang a haunting ballad called ‘Arcade’, back in 2019, the Netherlands won last time. This means the country has the joy, cost and (as it turns out) zero-tourism benefit of hosting the battle of tonsil-wobbling from countries loosely associated with Europe, like Australia.
Traditionally, Eurovision tells us, ‘six countries are automatically pre-qualified for the Grand Final. The so-called “Big 5” – France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom – and the host country.’ Fair? Who said anything was fair in geography?

The Netherlands' Jeangu Macrooy - Eurovision 2021 First Rehearsal

It’s time for our hosts to take the stage!
The Netherlands’ Jeangu Macrooy has had his first rehearsal of “Birth of a New Age” ahead of Eurovision 2021. How did the home performer do? Let’s see…
The Netherlands’ Jeangu Macrooy “Birth of a New Age” — Eurovision 2021 first rehearsal
Oliver: Jeangu Macrooy is a brilliant asset to the Netherlands in their hosting year. His performance opens with cracks forming in a grey backdrop, then revealing the Surinamese singer dressed in a cropped blue suit jacket, a black and red body harness and black trousers. He’s joined on stage by two backing vocalists — one of which is his twin brother Xillan — and one other dancer, who delivers a solo interpretive dance. At the chorus, “yu no man broko mi” and “you can’t break me” appear on the LED backdrop, just as they did in the song’s live debut. And for the final chorus, the grey backdrop turns into an explosion of colour, with all four members of the Dutch team finishing their performance on the stage catwalk. The most exciting part of this performance is the styling. It’s all very genderless and queer, but with the Surinamese cultural elements still remaining front and centre. All in all, it’s unapologetically and authentically Jeangu Macrooy.

Interview: Netherlands' Jeangu Macrooy on "Birth of a New Age"

As the effects of the coronavirus pandemic have rippled through society, musicians and artists are amongst those whose livelihoods have been significantly affected. With venues closing down and concerts and tours cancelled, many have focussed on channelling their energy into resilience. “I didn’t write any songs for a good three or four months”, says
Jeangu Macrooy. “The world was so different.”
In an exclusive interview with wiwibloggs, the Eurovision star said he struggled to find artistic inspiration throughout the pandemic. “I usually get my inspiration from going to the theatre, movies, just meeting friends randomly and having new conversations”, Jeangu told our William. “It’s been interesting”. But now, he’s ready to bounce back. Representing

We trawl through Instagram, Twitter and elsewhere so that y’all don’t have to. Eurovision news: 14 April
Efendi releases slow version of “Mata Hari”
Azerbaijan’s Eurovision 2021 superstar has unveiled a new interpretation of her song “Mata Hari”. Dubbed the “slow version”, the new mix is simpler in instrumentation and gives a more serious feel to Efendi’s otherwise upbeat and dance-worthy track for Rotterdam. The accompanying music video set at the Azeri coast sees Efendi sat alone at a white upright piano. She’s surrounded by fog for an ominous and eerie effect.
