Legendary New Zealand basketball coach Steve McKean dies after battle with cancer

Steve McKean was always passionate when it came to coaching the sport he loved.
Legendary New Zealand basketball coach Steve McKean has died after a short battle with cancer in New Plymouth on Monday.
The American arrived in New Zealand a half-century ago to link with, first, the Coca-Club in Auckland in 1971, and then, a year later, moved to the Panmure Young Citizens Centre across town where he set up a successful basketball programme.
A product of San Jose State University, he was one of the first “imports” to be brought out to play basketball in New Zealand on the back of a stellar collegiate career where he was lauded for his shooting ability.

McKean was at the helm of the Tall Blacks from 1972-1981 and led the team to their first ever win over Australia in 1978.
He started his New Zealand basketball career with the Auckland Club, Panmure, after arriving from the USA over 50 years ago.
He was an NBL coach for nine years, and during that time he was notably the coach of the first team in the NBL to win 100 games.

Steve McKean was a basketball legend, but in Taranaki he was simply known as 'Coach'

He called everyone ‘buddy’. And he made friends wherever he went.
Steve ‘Coach’ McKean has been remembered as a legend of sport in Taranaki following his death on Monday after being diagnosed with cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel, and daughter Naomi.
While best known nationally as a basketball coach, locally McKean reached thousands of young people either through his time teaching at Spotswood College or as regional director of the Taranaki Secondary Schools’ Sports Association (TSSSA), a position he held for 20 years.
McKean started the TSSSA, former Sport Taranaki boss Howie Tamati, who worked with him for 26 years, said.
