Educating girls is critical to the global Covid recovery plan

The pandemic has deepened the long-running crisis in global education. Many children around the world missed the majority of the last academic year. At the height of school closures, 1.6 billion children and young people were out of education. Girls have been among the hardest hit. When they are not enrolled in school they are more likely to be forced into child marriage, subjected to female genital mutilation and exposed to gender-based...

Schools are facing a serious dilemma on how to discipline learners, as teachers and parents reject the use of the cane to punish errant students.
Opinion remains divided on the proposal by the Ministry of Education to reintroduce the cane banned in 2001, as some stakeholders say it may be the magic stick to restore good manners in schools.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha last week hinted at a possible move to bring back the cane as cases of indiscipline increased in schools.

Summary
The Covid-19 economic crisis has put many families across the country in a fix, forcing them to make hard choices, if only to stay afloat.
Arguably, none has been as tough as the choice of school for the thousands of parents who have had to drastically cut their expenditure in the face of shrinking income sources.
The hole dug by the health pandemic on many a parent’s pockets was evident when schools reopened on January 4 with most seeking to transfer their children from private to public institutions.

Why this week is critical as learners and teachers settle down for challenging term

The government and education sector players will keenly be observing events of this week as they will determine the successful return to normal learning.
Compliance with the Covid-19 protocols among learners and teachers will be tested after the school community spent first two weeks in the institutions.
Primary and secondary school heads yesterday said most learners dropped their guard in the third week when schools opened for Grade Four, Standard Eight and Form Four classes late last year.
Some teachers say during the partial schools opening last year, most learners and teachers were not keen to wear masks and clear breach of some of the protocols was glaring during games and boarding sessions.

After a 10-month Covid-19 imposed holiday, an estimated eight million primary school learners will this morning start a national assessment.
The week-long assessment is being administered by the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec), but unlike other conventional examinations, there will be no ranking of learners according to the grades they score.
A circular released by Acting Knec Chief Executive Officer Mercy Karogo says the assessments will be administered up to Friday.
The learners’ assessment programme is part of the Sh1.5 billion Global Partnership for Education (GPE) boost towards the government’s schools reopening preparations.

Summary
The country has 23,000 public primary schools with more than 12 million pupils and more than three million students in secondary schools, not counting learners in private institutions.

There are neither additional classes, ablution facilities, nor complementary funding for schools as all levels of Kenyan learners resume in-class learning on January 4 after a nine-month disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The race is on to procure masks for over 10 million school-going children. In the next two days, every primary and secondary student must have at least two masks as part of measures to ward off Covid-19, which led to the closure of learning institutions 10 months ago.
It gets complicated for boarders who are supposed to have enough masks to last for 11 weeks because there won’t be a mid-term break and visits by guardians are prohibited.

Barely a month after schools were shut in March last year, to stem spread of the coronavirus, Prisca Asere noticed several changes in her house routine.
The quantity of food portions consumed in her house, with five children, drastically went up, pushing up the cost of meals as most family members stayed at home.
