Firefighters battled a wildfire spanning several acres near the CZU Lightning Complex burn scar in Santa Cruz County on Wednesday afternoon, Cal Fire officials said.
Authorities were first alterted to the 3 to 5-acre timber fire around 4:35 p.m. as it encroached on Greenvale Road near Highway 9 in Boulder Creek, said Cecile Juliette, a spokeswoman for Cal Fire’s San Mateo and Santa Cruz Unit. Firefighters halted the fire’s progress around 5:15 p.m.
The cause of the blaze — dubbed the “Fossil Fire” — remained under investigation, Juliette said. No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported.

A manhunt is underway in Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood, where police are searching for three armed suspects wanted in connection with a shooting that killed one person in Castro Valley on Tuesday.
Police have isolated the suspects to several blocks near Miles Avenue and Highway 24 and have instituted a shelter-in-place for residents while they search the area, said Sgt. Ray Kelly of the Alameda County sheriff’s office.
Kelly said Wednesday that authorities were following up on leads but had no additional updates to provide.
The manhunt comes after police tracked the suspects from a shooting in Castro Valley that left one person dead Tuesday.

A piece of machinery containing molten metal caught fire at Tesla’s Fremont car factory Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Hydraulic fluid, a flammable liquid used to power machines, was identified as the source of the fire, said Aisha Knowles, a spokeswoman for Fremont Fire. Firefighters arriving on scene around 4:27 p.m. were initially told not to use water to extinguish the flames.
The fire was confined to a vehicle stamping machine that contained molten aluminum, Knowles said. The machinery was located in a building under construction at the 45500 Fremont Boulevard plant.

Two of the country’s most powerful Catholic leaders said Tuesday that the use of fetal stem cells in the manufacturing process of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine raises “moral concerns,” a position that is at odds with the Vatican and California’s Catholic conference, which support all vaccines.

San Francisco did not receive the expected state codes Tuesday for educators to get priority for vaccines because the city’s city’s high-volume vaccination site was already fully booked, state officials said.
Alameda, Contra Costa and San Mateo counties confirmed they received the needed codes, which Gov. Gavin Newsom pledged last week counties would get as part of a new plan to set aside shots for teachers.

A parklet belonging to Haight-Ashbury bar The Alembic was vandalized with graffiti Thursday in what the bar’s owner characterized as an unsolicited piece of street art calling attention to San Francisco’s homelessness crisis.
“The city sweeps people, but not these?” a vandal spray-painted across the exterior wall of three separate dining pods outside the Haight Street bar. The vandal also installed pink curtains, a television, a welcome mat and a makeshift table set with dried flowers and a salt shaker.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday ordered indoor worship services to resume at 20% capacity in Santa Clara County, overturning the county’s ban on indoor religious gatherings.
Santa Clara County officials were “disappointed” in the decision, the county’s attorney James R. Williams said in a statement Friday evening.
“The Supreme Court order was issued without any analysis at all of the county’s gathering rules, which have always been neutral and applied equally to all gatherings across-the-board,” Williams said.
