The month of February is Black History Month: an important opportunity to celebrate Black culture and mark the significant contributions made by Black Ontarians to the success of our province and our country. It also provides a time to shine a light on injustices in our past and present.
Last year we welcomed a new community website: Dufferin County Canadian Black Association – https://dufferincountycba.org  – whose mission includes a platform to provide leadership for the continued development and enhancement of the Black community through civic engagement, education, programs and services and to advocate for equity and wellbeing for the Black community in Dufferin County. This is a valued resource for many individuals and families who are watching our communities grow. DCCBA has already hosted virtual events and has a number of events lined up that focusses on outreach, education and leadership. On February 20th, DCCBA is partnering with the Museum of Dufferin (MoD) to host an on-line panel that will discuss opportunities for our community to come together as a unified force, and what this means for our future. I look forward to join the panel for this discussion. Find out more information and get the link to the live stream at: https://www.dufferinmuseum.com/event/bhm/

Black History Month is being celebrated across the country with the theme “The Future is Now.”
“February is Black History Month,” said Mayor Allan Thompson. “It is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn about the many contributions that Black Canadians and their communities have made to this country.”
The month is to celebrate the achievements, contributions and the communities of Black Canadians, in both the past and the present. Black History Month was first recognized in Canada in 1979 after the Ontario Black History Society petitioned Toronto to designate February as such.
Black History Month was officially recognized in all of Canada in 1995 by the House of Commons.

Peel Art Gallery Museum and Archives (PAMA) presents the exhibitions:
This exhibition brings together works by several English Caribbean artists working at home (Trinidad and Jamaica) and in the diaspora (Canada, USA and the UK) to reflect on the breadth of contemporary aesthetic practices within the broader Caribbean community. The grouping of works explores a variety of urgent and common themes of identity, colonization as well as social activism and justice that connect all of humanity in our current global condition.
This exhibition is a celebration of one of many Black communities in the region of Peel. It highlights the personal journeys of leaders and mentors from the North Peel Community Church congregation. Their photos and objects illustrate stories of immigration, resilience, and family life, and how they established a community of faith in Caledon.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the local community organizations have buckled down to ensure residents of Caledon have been able to receive the care or resources they require.
Caledon Community Services (CCS) has run into a series of challenges amid the pandemic but have continued to overcome through the help from community members, organizations and local businesses.
CCS’s The Exchange is a community kitchen where local residents can access healthy, fresh food, and information and tools needed to learn basic nutrition and how to prepare meals.
Their food support program allows residents to receive packed and nutritious meals for individuals and families in need.
