The North Providence Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) commended officers involved in the arrest of a homicide suspect for "displaying exemplary judgement and deploying a less lethal use of force while effecting a dangerous arrest over the weekend."
Officers were called to the Cumberland Farms on Smith Street around 4:00 Saturday afternoon for a report of a fight. The victim, 60-year-old Brian Cervini, was found suffering from multiple stab wounds. He later died at the hospital.
The suspect, 27-year-old Christopher Cabajal, fled the scene. Witnesses helped direct officers to Cabajal's whereabouts at Rhode Island Billiard Bar and Bistro. Upon arriving, officers attempted to handcuff Cabajal, who violently resisted arrest. After multiple attempts to de-escalate the situation with verbal commands, officers were forced to deploy a taser on Cabajal. He was then taken into custody.
