Cook County rent relief program receives over 16,000 applications

The Cook County Emergency Rental Assistance Program received more than 16,000 applications by the close of its five week application period, which included a weeklong extension.
As of May 1, Cook County has disbursed just over $8.8 million of the program’s total $73 million. The county is still awarding grants from the program.
Applications are being reviewed in a tiered process by Cook County case auditors, according to Cook County Deputy Director of Communication Dunni Cosey Gay. Applicants with household income at or below 50 percent of the area median, who have also experienced 90 or more days of unemployment, are at the top of the list.

BOTHELL, Wash. -- A rash of catalytic converter thefts as now reached a senior center in Bothell.
When workers at the Northshore Senior Center arrived Tuesday morning, they discovered someone had stolen the converters from seven of their buses, rendering them inoperable.
"We are scrambling right now to figure out how to ensure we can continue to deliver meals to people, and also provide the paratransit services people in our community rely on," officials wrote on Facebook. They added they have no estimate when they can restore service or what the repair costs will entail.

BOTHELL, Wash. — A nonprofit in Bothell lost its only mode of transportation when thieves stole catalytic converters from seven of its vans.
A sawzall was wedged into the exhaust pipe of an eighth van.
"It's been quite a nightmare," said Northshore Senior Center Transportation Manager Cliff Perry.
The fleet of vans is used to deliver 60 meals a day to vulnerable seniors in Bothell.
Bothell Police Department spokesperson Cam Johnson said it's a pattern in the area and across the country. The metals inside the converters are valuable. Though all vehicles are potential targets, Johnson said commercial vehicles are targeted more often.
