PEN America Convenes Celebrated Authors Sept. 12 in NYC for "Words on Fire: Writing, Freedom, and the Future" Symposium

PEN America presents Words on Fire: Writing, Freedom, and the Future, an afternoon of urgent public conversation on the issues that drive the world’s leading free expression advocacy organization in this dire moment. Led by PEN America President Ayad Akhtar and CEO Suzanne Nossel, the event, a highlight of the organization’s 100th anniversary year, gathers renowned authors who are at the forefront of fighting for truth, open discourse and unfettered storytelling: Margaret Atwood, Jennifer Finney Boylan, Dave Eggers, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Words on Fire: Writing, Freedom, and the Future takes place on Monday, September 12, from 4-7pm in the Robert H. Smith Auditorium of the New-York Historical Society (170 Central Park West). The museum is currently hosting the special installation PEN America at 100: a Century of Defending the Written Word, featuring artifacts, photos and letters from PEN America’s decades in defense of free speech.

11 New Books We Recommend This Week

11 New Books We Recommend This Week
May 20, 2021Updated 6:07 p.m. ET
“Ideas mattered,” Louis Menand writes in his new book, explaining the rise of American culture in the years after World War II. They still do, which is why big ideas underpin a lot of this week’s recommended titles, from astrophysics and the nature of scientific celebrity (in Charles Seife’s “Hawking Hawking”) to the pandemic and historical reactions to catastrophe (in Niall Ferguson’s “Doom”). There’s a look at the causes and consequences of misogynist violence (in Jacqueline Rose’s “On Violence and On Violence Against Women”) and a couple of takes on artistic success (in Jean Hanff Korelitz’s novel “The Plot,” and in Menand’s own book, “The Free World”).

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's 'Notes on Grief' Is A Lament For Her Father's Death : NPR

Notes On Grief, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Knopf
The lament, a lyrical outpouring of sorrow, is one of the oldest and most universal art forms, with
The Lament for Sumer and Ur dating back 4,000 years to ancient Sumer.
Across time and cultures, the lament has been seen in
The Iliad and the Hindu Vedas
,
Beowulf and the Christian Bible
. It has been seen in the operas of Monteverdi and Purcell, the music of Mozart and Rossini. The lament permeates the piobaireachd music of Scotland. And for millennia, the lament has characterized African mourning traditions, from the Bantu in the East to the Igbo in the West.

NOTES ON GRIEF
By Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
June 2020 marked the 40th anniversary of my father’s death. In the months leading up to then I’d plotted ritualistic ways I might mark such loss. But by the time the anniversary arrived, more than 380,000 were dead from Covid. That grief of mine, no longer singular, was subsumed in the collective wail. That is, until Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s visceral exploration of her own father’s unexpected death that month. In 30 short sections, “Notes on Grief” lays a path by which we might mourn our individual traumas among the aggregate suffering of this harrowing time. Our guide, Adichie, is uncloaked, full of “wretched, roaring rage,” teaching us within the space of this work how to gather our disparate selves and navigate the still-raging pandemic. In doing this, she tells a global story of this moment, while mapping how her writerly voice, in particular, came to be.

We’re big fans of essays that combine cultural criticism with memoir, and Larissa Pham’s
Pop Song especially sings when the writer turns her eye to art and pop culture. In her debut book of nonfiction—memoir by way of interconnected essays—Pham interweaves a recounting of her life thus far with her thoughts on James Turrell, Anne Carson, Frank Ocean, and Agnes Martin (extra points for not mentioning Maggie Nelson in “Blue,” Pham’s essay on Martin). Through her sensitive, curious telling, Pham lobbies for the way in which art can help people learn more about themselves.
