These states—Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Telangana, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala and Odisha—have told the health ministry that they are short of vaccines even to cover those due for their second dose in the first two weeks of the month.

“Supplies to states would be replenished periodically. The states are conveyed in advance the fortnightly supplies they would receive,” a senior health ministry official told ET.
At least seven state governments have asked for urgent replenishment of vaccine stocks from the Centre, saying their current supplies are insufficient to cover those due for their second shot this month in the 45-plus age group.

Next phase of Covid-19 vaccination unlikely from May 1 as supplies scarce

Synopsis
The Centre earlier this month expanded the eligibility age for vaccinations to 18 years and above, to be serviced by state governments and private hospitals. But SII and Bharat Biotech may send Covid vaccines to states and private hospitals only by 3rd week of month or later.
AP
These delays will slow down India’s vaccination drive at a time when it needs to be accelerated to subdue the rising tide of infections engulfing the country and overwhelming its healthcare system.
State governments and private hospitals are unlikely to begin their vaccination programmes for the 18-44 years age group on May 1 as Serum Institute of India (SII) and Bharat Biotech have expressed their inability to supply jabs to them before the third week of the month. Chhattisgarh claims it has been told it will get vaccines only in July.

covid vaccines: Some states start rationing Covid vaccines as inventories dwindled

Synopsis
Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha continued to shut vaccination centres on the third consecutive day as inventories dwindled. Odisha closed 700 vaccination centres on Wednesday and 300 more on Thursday. The state cut its inoculation numbers by half over Wednesday and Thursday to ensure its Covid-19 public immunisation drive doesn’t stop completely.

Faced with low vaccine stocks, some states changed tack on Thursday and scaled down inoculations by half, focussing on administering second doses instead of first jabs. The Centre, however, dismissed reports of low supplies as “fear mongering” and said India had enough stocks.
