In January 2020, Nam Tran and his colleagues in the UC Davis Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine were scaling up testing platforms for seasonal influenza and the common cold.
The UC Davis Health Specialty Testing Center Lab team developed COVID-19 testing capable of performing more than 1,000 tests per day.
Tran is a professor of clinical pathology at the UC Davis School of Medicine. He was following reports out of China about a mysterious new respiratory virus, SARS-CoV-2. Not much was known at the time about how the novel coronavirus spread or what the mortality rate was.

कोरोना वायरस मरीज के ठीक हो जाने के बाद भी सेंट्रल नर्वस सिस्टम (केंद्रीय तंत्रिका तंत्र) पर हमला बोल रहा है। यह खुलासा राजकीय फार्मेसी महाविद्यालय रोहड़ू के फार्मा विभाग की प्रियंका नागू, विनीत मेहता, शूलिनी विश्वविद्यालय सोलन की फैकल्टी ऑफ फार्मास्युटिकल साइंसेज के अरुण पराशर और पंजाब के चिटकारा कॉलेज ऑफ फार्मेसी राजपुरा के तपन बहल के संयुक्त शोध पत्र में किया गया है। इसे बाद में भी पर्किंसोनिसिज्म, अल्जाइमर, अवसाद जैसी बीमारियों को बढ़ाने में सहायक कहा गया है। यह वायरस न केवल पल्मोनरी या इससे संबंधित प्रणाली को ही खराब कर रहा है, बल्कि केंद्रीय तंत्रिका तंत्र पर भी असर डाल रहा है। इन विशेषज्ञों ने इस बारे में और भी अध्ययन करने की जरूरत जताई है। इन शोध पत्र के अनुसार कोविड 19 संक्रमण को आम तौर पर कफ, बुखार, सांस लेने में दिक्कत, मांसपेशियों में दर्द, स्वाद खत्म होना जैसे लक्षणों से जोड़ा जाता है।
इन विशेषज्ञों ने कई हालिया रिपोर्टों का हवाला देते हुए स्पष्ट किया है कि यह सेंट्रल नर्वस सिस्टम पर भी हमला करता है, जिससे दीर्घकालिक समस्याएं आती हैं। शुरुआती दौर में इन समस्याओं को हो सकता है कि नोटिस ही न किया जा सके। इस बारे में प्रमाण बताते हैं कि यह वायरस सीएनएस में एंजियोटकेंसिन कनवर्टिंग एंजाइम -दो एसीई-दो रिसेप्टर, न्यूरोन परिवहन, हीमेटोजेनस या नेजर रूट से ऑलफैक्टरी बल्ब, क्रिबरिफॉर्म प्लेट आदि के माध्यम से प्रवेश कर सकता है। इसमें ट्रांस सिनेप्टिक सिग्नलिंग से वृद्धि हो सकती है। इससे एसीई-2 रिसेप्टर क्षतिग्रस्त हो सकता है। इससे ब्लड ब्रेन बैरियर डिसरप्शन, न्यूरो डिजेनरेशन आदि होती हैं। सेंट्रल नर्वस सिस्टम में अगर वायरल आक्रमण होता है तो इससे पर्किंसोनिज्म, अल्जाइमर, मेनिंगिटीज, एनसेफेलोपैथी, एनोस्मिया, हाईपोस्मिया, चिंता, अवसाद, स्ट्रोक आदि होने की आशंका होती है। ऐसे में कोविड 19 से ठीक हो जाने के बाद भी सेंट्रल नर्वस सिस्टम से संबंधित जटिलताएं मरीज को हो सकती हैं।
