Unemployed Floridians sue state to reinstate federal jobless benefits

Unemployed Floridians sue state to reinstate federal jobless benefits
Jordan Bowen reports
TAMPA, Fla. - Governor Ron DeSantis is facing legal action after ending federal unemployment benefits last month. A group of jobless Floridians is now suing the state to have the $300 per week in benefits reinstated.
The 15-page lawsuit demands the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity and the governor reinstate federal unemployment benefits.
"There's a lot of upset people that are really in need of this money and have nowhere to turn," attorney Scott Behren said.
The lawsuit, filed in Broward County Circuit Court Sunday, argues the DeSantis administration violated state law last month when it stopped providing $300 a week in federal unemployment assistance. The payments approved by Congress were authorized to continue until September 6.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Come June 1, out-of-work Floridians will again be required to search for work and report those efforts to the state.
On Wednesday, the Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) launched what it's calling a "return to work" initiative.
DEO Secretary Dane Eagle said the bottom line is that 400,000 jobs are out there, vaccines are available and the federal unemployment benefits won't last forever.
“Obviously the goal here is to help everyone find employment. There is hope on the horizon, 400,000 jobs are out there, we want to help connect you with those jobs," Eagle said.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Out-of-work Floridians will soon once again have to show they’re looking for work to keep collecting unemployment checks.
The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, which oversees the state’s reemployment program and distributes unemployment benefits, said there are plenty of employers looking to hire.
Altrua Global Solutions, a Tallahassee-based printing company, usually prints ads and promotional material for businesses. Now, the business is primarily printing “Help Wanted” signs for employers.
And, according to the printing company’s leadership, even Altrua is having trouble finding employees.

TAMPA, Fla. — Out-of-work Floridians continue to turn to ABC Action News for help in getting the benefits some say never came.
As COVID-19 damaged industries across the state, Daniel Eckert's job as an electrician's helper went from 40 hours a week to barely anything.
"I was getting maybe five to seven hours a month work," he said. "That was not enough to pay my bills."
He says family helped keep him afloat for as long as they could, but in the end, he says he was evicted from his apartment and is now sleeping on his niece's couch.
