India Reports Shortage of Wood Needed for Funeral Pyres as COVID Deaths Surpass 234K
On 5/7/21 at 10:38 AM EDT
Some cities in India are reporting a shortage of wood needed for funeral pyres to cremate the bodies of deceased COVID-19 victims, as coronavirus deaths surpass more than 234,000.
In Varanasi, a city regarded as the spiritual capital of the nation, the situation has gotten so bad that local crematorium workers have said the demand for wood is four times higher than the usual rate.
"As long as I've worked here, I've never seen so many dead bodies coming in. The last month has shocked me," a man working at a crematorium site in Varanasi told CNN. "The three main suppliers have run out of wood. The local administration had to intervene," he added.

New Zealand Herald readers have raised a staggering $203,791 for World Vision in just three days to provide relief for India's Covid-19 crisis.
The money will go towards desperately needed supplies of oxygen, beds, medical supplies and food in India, where daily new cases have topped 400,000 and the official death tally is almost 4000 a day. Experts believe both figures are an undercount.

Indian Doctor Says Hospital Beds Have Waiting Lists Up to 75 Names Long, 'We Are Devastated'

Indian Doctor Says Hospital Beds Have Waiting Lists Up to 75 Names Long, 'We Are Devastated'
On 5/5/21 at 3:31 PM EDT
In an article published in the
New Zealand Herald, Joseph, who is a public health and infectious diseases expert, described the situation in India as "devastating" and warned that the situation will likely worsen in the coming weeks.
"There is something especially soul-crushing about being a doctor and not being able to help. You feel like you have everything, but you can't do anything," Joseph wrote.
"The second wave of Covid-19 in India has been like nothing we've ever seen before," he added. "Hospital beds now have waiting lists. Each one has as many as 75 patients waiting for it. That has been the reality for the past two or three weeks all across India. And there's a massive shortage of oxygen. Hospitals all over the country are crying out for oxygen. Beds with ventilators are a distant dream."
