Upcoming singer Batila speaks on racism in Germany, songwriting for Papa Wemba
“Many people in the place we were staying had never seen black people before."
Fast-rising Congolese musician Batila has opened up on being racially abused growing up Germany. Born Batila Ange da Costa in 1979 to Congolese and Angolan parents, his family relocated to Germany in 1985. Recounting the stay in Germany, the singer told
Standard Entertainment & Lifestyle they faced racial discrimination, being the only blacks in Willebadessen town.
“Many people in the place we were staying had never seen black people before and I had to constantly fight against ignorance and racism for myself and four younger siblings. To get recognition, I had to work twice as hard as my Caucasian peers. Dating as a teenager was a nightmare but thankfully, I have a close-knit family and they were always there for me,” he said.

Summary
An edgy fusion has been a hallmark of Fally's solo career since he collaborated with US rapper Olivia of the hip hop group G-Unit a decade ago on the hit single “Chaise Electrique.”
Along the way, he has performed at international events with other rap artists like Snoop Lion and Eve.
What is not in doubt throughout the album is the singer’s vocal prowess, no matter the style or fusion, his exquisite trademark delivery in Lingala and French never disappoints.
Fans of Congolese musician Fally Ipupa will know that his success has come from an ability to experiment, a versatility that often pushes the boundaries of traditional rumba towards a fusion with a range of global influences.
