European Super League: Is an African version realistic?

The concept, a brainchild of Gianni Infantino - despite Fifa's apparent resistence to the European plans - which was first broached in 2020, has split the continent’s footballing stakeholders, but not quite down the middle.
Despite the Fifa president describing it in such flowery terms as “a new chapter for African football”, the overwhelming majority, at this time, find it to be an unworkable framework, and indeed it would be a pale, forgotten abortus already but for the ongoing annexation of Caf by world football’s governing body.
The hand of Infantino is impossible to miss in the politics of the continent’s football, and so it was that, upon the confirmation of Motsepe, Simba CEO Barbara Gonzalez promptly tweeted to the effect that plans to execute the Super League were underway.

A casting conundrum: who plays the supporting roles in South Africa: The Movie?

The Daily Vox
Movies and series have helped many of us to get through the pandemic, keeping us entertained and distracted. But if you pause Netflix for a moment, look up and look around, you’ll also realise that we’re living each day in a movie: on both its best and its worst days, South Africa is a summer blockbuster. Politicians are the so-called heroes who are meant to run things but instead end up fighting amongst each other and leaving a trail of destruction. Never mind them, then – let’s take a look at the all-important supporting cast and crew who all too often have to sweep in and save the day.

YONELA DIKO: DA at a crossroads: In search of political relevance on the cheap
Tony Leon has always embodied the historic liberal project in this country, which has always been premised on an anti-apartheid slogan that can simply be put as “why oppress black people when you can use them”. It is a liberal project that Helen Suzman and those Democratic Alliance (DA) founders captured well, calling out apartheid on one hand, but rejecting universal franchise of equality and one-man one-vote for black people. It is the same liberal project that the current DA leader, John Steenhuisen, is counting on.

South Africa ready for 5G revolution?
SOUTH Africa is ready to harness the benefits of 5G technology, but there’s much work to be done to urgently resolve outstanding regulatory and other matters.
Aimed at unpacking the myths, dispelling misinformation and showing how the technology can benefit South Africa in creating a more just and equal society were among the major themes during a webinar last week in which delegates were told that much work has to be done to ensure 5G becomes ubiquitous for Africans.
While job creation and growing the economy underpinned deliberations, the webinar took place amid global hysteria over 5G and its perceived harmful effects. Speakers told participants at the webinar that 5G remains a central issue for the entire globe but in South Africa it’s critical because of the centrality of technology in the country’s development path.

Augusto Palacios wants Patrice Motsepe to clamp down on age-cheating

Apr 4, 2021 - 11:00 am
By Sipho Mlotha
Former Orlando Pirates coach Augusto Palacios says newly-appointed CAF president Patrice Motsepe must find ways to deal with the issue of age-cheating in African football.
Although the problem is not only exclusive to this continent, it remains a big headache for African football.
Last year, the Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Botswana and Comoros Island were disqualified from the COSAFA Men's Under-17 Championship for fielding overaged players.
"I think with Patrice the first thing should be about youth development in Africa," Palacios tells
"To clean this thing of cheating of the age. For youth development and clubs and national team it needs to be great. He needs to create a new competition you see like COSAFA has. You can't have COSAFA alone. But congratulations to him it's a good achievement you know, it's beautiful because we've been always controlled by Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, now it's different.

What Qatar 2022 World Cup put together, death has put asunder
By Onochie Anibeze
I knew what the words meant but I still didn’t understand them. She sent me a document March 18, and thereafter took ill, and three days later, she was dead.
A friend had sent me a text message that read ‘Foussena is no more.’ I replied, asking ‘what do you mean?’.
It didn’t make sense to me. On the day she sent me the document from Accra, Ghana, she raised concern over network problems that had disrupted her calls to me.
We cracked some jokes, discussed 2022 World Cup in Qatar, CAF and FIFA politics and the emergence of Patrice Motsepe as CAF President.

CAF confirms dates for rescheduled Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon
Saturday, 3 April 2021
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6 in 2022.
The tournament was due to take place in January and February 2021, but the CAF announced last June that the event would be rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which prevented qualifiers taking place.
New dates for the event were confirmed at a CAF Executive Committee meeting chaired by the organisation’s new President Patrice Motsepe, which also included secretary general Véron Mosengo-Omba.
The tournament draw will take place on June 25.

Francs Jeux CAN 2021 at the start of 2022

CAN 2021 at the start of 2022
End of the suspense. The African Football Confederation (CAF), now chaired by South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe, formalised the dates of the next men’s Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday, April 1st. CAN 2021 will take place from January 9th to February 6th, 2022 in Cameroon. The draw for the final phase, which will show the composition of the six groups, will be held on June 25th, 2021. “
The Executive Committee unanimously approved the proposed dates for the organisation of the draw (June 25, 2021) and of the final tournament of the CAN Total Cameroon 2021 (from January 9 to February 6, 2022)”, indicates the body in a press release. With such a calendar, the African selections should be able to organise a preparation camp worthy of the name, the expatriate players in the foreign championships being often released by their clubs for the winter break. To date, 23 of the 24 countries qualified for CAN 2021 are known. The postponed match between Sierra Leone and Benin will determine the name of the last qualifier.

TymeBank signs 3 millionth customer to reach a new milestone amid Covid crisis
By Philippa Larkin
JOHANNESBURG - DIGITAL retail bank TymeBank has reached the landmark 3 million customer milestone amid the challenging Covid-19 crisis, and says it will power on to expand future offerings that will include insurance and value-added services.
TymeBank, which was launched in 2019, said its lower fees were a compelling proposition for consumers, with onboarding customers of between 100 000 and 120 000 each month and 3 000 and 5 000 new customers every day.
Although the bank entered into a deal with the Zionist Christian Church in February last year to onboard a large proportion of the church’s 9 million member base, the initiative has largely been postponed due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and would gain momentum once Covid-19 preventative measures were relaxed.
