said the state is committed to getting help to those affected. paulo sandoval has more. >> reporter: good morning to you. another storm system making its way through the northeast leaving in its wake some frigid temperatures and also the looming threat of flooding here in patterson, new jersey. we're been monitoring the levels in the nearby passaic, most of the weekend here with forecasters expecting it to rise and because of that, we've seen some of the river basically over flow its banks and affect so many neighborhoods here in patterson, new jersey. in the last several days, we know that well over 20 rescues, at least well over 20 people had to be rescued from homes and these are low-lying areas that are familiar with the flooding potential of the passaic. over the weekend, also heard from new jersey governor who surveyed the area. we should also mention that authorities are still going to be tracking of course the situation here on the ground and this comes after just a soaker

all this water, the source of it is actually the passaic river you mentioned a little while ago, the river 90 or 100 yards away from where i'm standing. according to new jersey's governor, the passaic has already been at flood level for the last several days. any additional rain could lead to even more flooding, potentially worse than what we experienced in december. these neighborhoods you're looking at here in patterson, these are some of the low-lying areas. the folks who live and work in this part of the neighborhood are quite familiar with the flooding potential of the passaic. authorities have been closely monitoring the forecast, calling for another 2 feet above what we're seeing right now, which is why authorities have set up these sort of barricades throughout the neighborhood. we've been here for quite some time, fred. people are taking their chances, choosing to drive in, while others are simply just shifting into reverse, which is perhaps the wisest thing. in neighboring new york, a flood warning, coastal flood warning in effect for another hour and a half or so. it really does speak to the advisories, the warnings, and

potential for power outages. now that the winds have scaled back, the only threat that remains, of course the floods. you mentioned a little while ago the passaic river in patterson, new jersey, cuts through this community. we see car after car bravering the ponding, others shift in reverse and go the other way. one local law enforcement official telling my colleague that it was not as bad as predicted. nonetheless, they are keeping a keen eye on the river because that's where all of this water is coming from. there's still a projected roughly 2 foot rise in the water, at least in the passaic river. and this is a body of water that had been at flood stages for quite some time, and there were concerns they could surpass what the region experienced last month. ne nonetheless this is a story of inconvenience. two dozen individuals had to be rescued from their homes in and around the region in the last couple of days.
