Justice for My Mother

Sarah Halimi was murdered for being a religious Jew. Why has her own community ignored her fate?

A few days before Pesach 2017, Sarah Halimi, a 65-year-old Jewish preschool director, had come home from work when an intruder entered through the balcony doors of her third-floor apartment in Paris’s 11th arrondissement.
It was her downstairs neighbor Kobili Traoré, a towering, fanatically religious Muslim originally from Mali, and he’d come to kill her.
Within seconds, Sarah was fighting desperately for her life, as Traoré, high on cannabis, screamed “Allahu Akbar” and beat the frail religious woman savagely. Alerted by the terrified neighbors, police arrived but stood outside the locked apartment door, waiting for an anti-terror unit to arrive.

JTA — The 2017 murder of a Jewish woman in France has again burst into global view, with protests held in several countries last week against a legal ruling that means her killer will not face a trial for murder.
But who is Sarah Halimi? Why is her death becoming a cause celebre for Jews around the world? And what, if anything, are the protests aimed at changing for Jews in France?

Judge Resigns in Protest After Court Won't Try Murder of Jewish Woman: 'Anti-Semitic Assassination'

A French judge with more than 25 years of service resigned from his position on Monday, in protest of a controversial court ruling earlier this month that allowed an anti-Semitic man who killed a Jewish woman in 2017 to escape trial.
Jack Broda, an 82-year-old associate judge at the judicial tribunal in the city of Nancy, told media outlets that he could no longer serve his post after France's highest court chose not to try a man responsible for murder.
"I decided to resign over the ruling, which at first I couldn't believe," Broda told

A psychotic episode?
Four years ago, Halimi was fast asleep when Traoré broke into her apartment in the middle of the night, tortured her for 20 minutes and then threw her off her third-floor balcony.
During the attack, neighbors said they heard Traoré scream
Allahu akbar, the Arabic phrase for “God is great.” He also reportedly shouted, “I killed the devil.”
Traoré confessed to Halimi’s murder, but his lawyers argued that he couldn’t be tried because he was suffering from a psychotic episode after smoking a large amount of marijuana.
A court agreed, and earlier this month, the decision was upheld by the Court of Cassation, France’s highest appeals court. Traoré is currently in a psychiatric institution.
