South African 100-metre champion Akani Simbine showed why he is among the world’s elite sprinters as he overcame a three-metre deficit when he took the baton on the final leg of the 4x100m World Relay Championships race in Silesia, Poland on Sunday.
Three metres on the track over 100-metres with a flying start, is roughly a 0.4 second deficit on the clock. Simbine made that up with every millimetre to spare. He dipped for the line to give SA gold over Brazil, whose final leg sprinter Paulo Andre Camilo de Oliveira, faded in the final 10 metres.

PARIS: Akani Simbine led South Africa’s 4x100m quartet to a dramatic victory at the World Athletics Relays in Poland on Sunday.
Simbine, a sub-10 second 100m runner, took over the baton three metres down on Brazil’s Paulo Andre Camilo de Oliveira but snatched victory on the line by a hundredth of a second in a time of 38.71sec.
The race in Silesia, Poland, was so close that the Brazilians were celebrating before the South Africans were announced as winners.
The Brazilians’ disappointment was compounded when they were then disqualified for running out of their lane.

Just one week after clocking 10.72 for 100m, Sha'Carri Richardson continued her fine form to run 22.11 (1.0m/s) in her 200m season debut at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, Florida, on Friday (16).
It is the 21-year-old’s second quickest ever time for the distance behind her PB of 22.00 set in Florida last August and saw the world U20 record-holder win the heat by almost half a second ahead of Lynna Irby with 22.57.
World and Olympic medallist Blessing Okagbare was third in 22.66.
The time clocked by Richardson – who moved to sixth on the world all-time list with her 100m run the week before – is the second fastest in the world at this early point of the season behind Shaunae Miller-Uibo’s 22.03 from earlier this month.
