The PA GOP's un-American effort to legislate political correctness

By Rogers M. Smith
The Pennsylvania House Committee on Education is now considering House Bill 1532, the "Teaching Racial and Universal Equality" or “TRUE” act. Its expressed goal is to enact “restrictions on racist and sexist concepts.”
Since the term “political correctness” first emerged in the 1980s, it has meant opposition to racism and sexism and the championing of equality — usually by liberals, and usually by rhetorical exhortation, not by governmental coercion.
In a bold feat of political ju-jitsu, TRUE advocates are turning this older political correctness on its head, in two ways. First, they seek to label a wide range of liberal views as “racist” and “sexist.” Second, they seek to banish those views, not through persuasive counter-arguments, but through the heavy punitive hand of the state.
