N4T Investigators: ID.me addresses issues with filing for unemployment

TUCSON (KVOA) - For months, the N4T Investigators have heard from small business owners who were receiving dozens of fraudulent unemployment claims made with their company's name.
“No one has worked for our company in three years," said Sandra Castillo.  "So I know they’re all fraudulent.”
Castillo’s husband owns a small painting business that received more than 100 unemployment claims.
The N4T Investigators have also heard from people who had their identity stolen and used to file for unemployment fraudulently.
“I received a letter from collections saying I owe $242 for unemployment,” said Legina Lewis. "I’m very worried because this isn’t a debt that I owe."

Many Americans Fall Victim to Unemployment Aid Fraud

Many Americans Fall Victim to Unemployment Aid Fraud
WASHINGTON—Generous unemployment benefits put in place by the CARES Act and subsequent relief packages to respond to pandemic-related joblessness have become an easy target for identity thieves and other criminals. Most states have been hit by fraud committed on a vast scale, mainly by international organized crime rings.
In March, the Labor Department inspector general’s office estimated that more than $63 billion in unemployment benefits had been paid out improperly through fraud or errors since the beginning of the pandemic.
Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) called it “a frightening number” that exceeds “the entire budget of the Department of Homeland Security.”

The expansion of eligibility for jobless benefits to self-employed individuals during the coronavirus pandemic has caused a 4,800 percent increase in unemployment fraud cases, according to an identity theft expert speaking Monday at a House Ways and Means Committee roundtable.
Eva Velasquez, CEO of the Identity Theft Resource Center, recited that figure during a presentation titled "$60 Billion and Counting: The Consequences of Unchecked Pandemic Unemployment Fraud." She said that identify theft increased during the pandemic and, rather than slowing down, "if anything, we're seeing it increase."

Verified delays: Unemployment process stalls benefits

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - It’s been almost two months since Debra Voss received any unemployment benefits.
Voss lost her job just before the beginning of the pandemic and successfully applied for unemployment in early March of 2020. But a year later Voss received an email from the North Carolina Division of Employment Security telling her to sign up for ID.me, an identity verification site. Once she did, she hit roadblocks within the site and stopped receiving her benefits.
