Pacaya volcano fires ash 3,200 meters into the air
1 minute read
Guatemala City, Feb 21 (efe-epa).- Guatemala’s Pacaya volcano continued to erupt Sunday with explosions sending ash columns 3,200 meters into the air, warned the National Institute for Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh).
In its most recent bulletin, Insivumeh warned that the volcano’s high level of activity is accompanied by ashfall on villages more than 25 kilometers away, as well as lava flow.
Located 60 kilometers south of Guatemala City, the explosions could be observed from the capital, according to EFE.
Pacaya, a stratovolcano with an elevation of 2,552 meters, also caused rumbles and vibrations around the surrounding areas and villages located on its slopes, while ballistic material fell about 500 meters around the crater.

Hollywood Forever crematorium takes on COVID-19 death surge

Listen to this story
Diego Pablo had trained the young man in the craft of burning human bodies down to ash.
Inside the crematorium, 44-year-old Pablo watched as his protege prepared to push the rose-covered cardboard coffin into the furnace’s yawning mouth.
“What’s next?” Pablo asked, a gentle reminder to the 23-year-old — who towered over him — that something was missing.

Tristen McBride, who wore a blue coat that fell above his jean-clad knees, snapped his fingers. He had forgotten the roller used to ease the box into the cremation chamber. It was only his third night shift in the crematory at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

UK is helping indigenous communities in Peten to protect and use their ancient traditional medicine
The project called “Green Health” is researching medical use of biodiversity (based on indigenous healthcare practices), to develop mechanisms protecting this knowledge, and consider how to use this to increase the health and prosperity of less favoured groups in Guatemala.
Other partners of the project are the University College London (UCL), Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG) and the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP). Originally funded with more than 3 million quetzals for three years, the project recently received an extra 500,000 quetzals allocation to fight the impact of COVID-19 and help communities to overcome economic hurdles associated to it.
