Vic Ladlad's wife to AMLC: Lift 'immoral, unjust' freeze order on bank accounts

Vic Ladlad's wife to AMLC: Lift ‘immoral, unjust’ freeze order on bank accounts

The wife of detained National Democratic Front consultant Vicente Ladlad has appealed to the Anti-Money Laundering Council (ALMC) to lift what she called the “immoral and reprehensible” freezing of her husband’s bank accounts.
In a May 31 letter to central bank governor Benjamin Diokno, the AMLC chair, Fides Lim lamented the “unjust freezing” of the Land Bank of the Philippines accounts of Ladlad, who was arrested in November 2018 for alleged illegal possession of firearms, the usual charge made against activists.
“This latest government action of freezing his legal compensation is a gross injustice that compounds the dark history of Martial Law and victimizes the victim anew with greater suffering. The lifting of the AMLC’s freeze order on his compensation accounts with the LBP will rectify this injustice and assure humanitarian support for his pressing medical needs,” she said.

Exiled Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria Sison said that he and his wife were not bothered by the Anti-Terror Law Council's (ATC) designation of the couple as terrorists.
“My wife Julieta and I are not at all bothered by Resolution Number 17 (2021) which designates the two of us as “terrorists,” Sison said in a statement on Thursday, May 13.
Sison slammed the so-called “inconsistent list” by National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr, vice chairperson of the ATC and its de facto head. The chairperson is President Rodrigo Duterte.

Terror designation of petitioner peace consultant boosts SC case – lawyers

Terror designation of petitioner peace consultant boosts SC case – lawyers

Of the 19 people designated as terrorists by the Philippine government based on the contentious anti-terror law, one is actually a petitioner in the ongoing Supreme Court (SC) case where legal standing has been a major issue.
Rey Claro Casambre, among the peace consultants labelled by the council, is a petitioner on record in one of the 37 petitions filed challenging the constitutionality of the feared law.
"With Casambre designated and injured by the anti-terror council, the terror law petitions now have a surer footing in court with his established legal standing to file suit," said the Public Interest Law Center, Casambre's lawyer.

At SC, Esperon red-tags progressives and warns of new terror designations

At SC, Esperon red-tags progressives and warns of new terror designations

Only a day after exhaustive lectures on the complexities of communism and why it's harmful to red-tag, National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr was allowed by the Supreme Court to red-tag progressive groups in open court Wednesday, May 12, during Day 8 of the anti-terror law oral arguments.
Esperon also announced that the anti-terror council would make new terror designations, not of groups but individuals supposedly connected to the Communist Party of the Philippines-New Peoples' Army (NPA). The designation could be published as early as Thursday, May 13.
"I do not want to preempt the anti-terrorism council, because I have not seen yet the designation of several persons connected with the CPP-NPA, but we will do that. There is a resolution of the anti-terror council, but until we have published these in local papers, we will not name them publicly, tomorrow they will come out in the papers," Esperon told the Supreme Court.

SC tears into anti-terror law's biggest gaps with Calida still on sideline

SC tears into anti-terror law's biggest gaps with Calida still on sideline
May 4, 2021 9:35 PM PHT
If petitioners had to battle the often-used justification of national security, government lawyers were finally put under the heat to defend the anti-terror law's biggest constitutional gaps, courtesy of the junior justices of the Supreme Court who took the first turns of interpellations on Tuesday, May 4.
Associate Justice Rosmari Carandang opened the government interpellation last week, by tradition as she is the member-in-charge, but during Day 6 on Tuesday, the Supreme Court reversed the sequence so the most junior began first.
Justice Jhosep Lopez, who asked petitioners two months ago whether "right to privacy must give way in order to curb threats of terrorism," came out swinging in asking solicitors general about the loopholes of the law's most contentious provisions.

With anti-terror law, red-tagged campus press struggle to report during pandemic

Under the COVID-19 pandemic and the passage of the anti-terror law, the threats to campus publications take on a greater severity and pose serious challenges to student journalists' reportage.
This is on top of campus publications already being subjected to attacks and suppression, even by their own school administrations. The College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) has recorded almost 1,000 violations against campus press freedom since 2010.
Heightened harassment, red-tagging
Aside from universities, student publications are among the targets of the government’s red-tagging spree, after several were described as legal fronts of the communist movement without basis.
