The Philippines has detected its first half-dozen cases of a highly infectious coronavirus strain originally identified in India, the health department announced Wednesday, as the government widened a COVID-19 ban on travelers arriving from South Asian countries.
The six people were among 110 passengers who arrived in the Philippines from India before April 27, when Manila closed its borders to travelers from India or those who had visited that country within 14 days before landing in the Philippines, the health department said.
“As to these Indian travelers that were quarantined upon arrival here before the restrictions were imposed, 110 of them underwent testing and six turned out to be positive, and it is now submitted to the Philippine Genome Center for whole genome sequencing,” department spokeswoman Maria Rosario Vergeire said.

Philippines extends entry ban on foreigners to curb COVID-19 cases

Philippines extends entry ban on foreigners to curb COVID-19 cases
The Philippines will extend its travel ban on new entries for foreigners until April 30, as the number of reported coronavirus cases remains high, the government said Friday.
The ban, which started on March 22, was initially set to be lifted on April 21. But it will be prolonged by more than a week as the Southeast Asian country has seen on average around 10,000 new daily infections this week.

Under the ban issued by the national task force handling the measures against the pandemic, foreigners are prohibited from entering the Philippines, though there are several exceptions.
