A stream of awards: On Oscars 2021

After last year’s Oscar sweep by
Parasite, there were those who peddled the myth that lightning will not strike the same place twice. It kind of did in the 93rd Academy Awards, when the Best Supporting Actress award went to South Korean Youn Yuh-jung, for her role as granny Soon-ja in the heart-warming
Minari, beating off competition from Glenn Close’s mad-haired Mamaw in
Hillbilly Elegy. Anthony Hopkins winning his second Best Actor Oscar (he first won for
The Silence of the Lambs) for
The Father was disappointing, even if deserving. The sentimental favourite was the late Chadwick Boseman, who turned in an incendiary performance as the mercurial trumpeter, Levee Green, in

The Oscars will air April 25, 2021, at 8 p.m. EDT. If you want to stream them, and the movies that are nominated, you have your work cut out for you – but why would you bother? The Oscars are just a bunch of malarky, right?
Well, sorta. They’re definitely not a real “award show,” as in the movie that wins “Best Picture” is rarely the best film to come out that year (and if it is, it’s a coincidence). Instead, the ceremony is an advertisement for the movie industry. Movies about movies (This year: “Mank”) or movies that cover a timely issue (This year: “The Trial of the Chicago 7” has obvious parallels to the biggest news stories of 2020) have a huge advantage.

Where to Watch the 2021 Best Picture Oscar Nominees

For a while, the biggest film story of 2020 was what movies
weren’t coming out, as the pandemic closed theaters and bumped release dates for some of the year’s biggest would-be blockbusters (see you later,
Black Widow and
No Time to Die, hopefully) and buzziest awards-bait (or is there another reason Spielberg directed a remake of
West Side Story?). But no more, because it turns out a lot of good movies were still released last year—and lots of them have just been nominated for Oscars.
But the biggest difference between this Oscar year and any other is that you can easily (if not necessarily
