Pierre de Coubertin, oče sodobnih olimpijskih iger, je imel precej romantizirane predstave, a olimpijsko gibanje je preživelo vse težave, tudi dve svetovni vojni in pandemijo.
Zvečer 23. junija 1894, ob koncu osmega, zadnjega dneva mednarodnega olimpijskega kongresa v Parizu, je baron Pierre de Coubertin svojim kolegom izrekel zgovorno zdravico: "Dvignem kozarec na olimpijsko idejo, ki je kot mogočen sončni žarek prebila meglice vekov in se vrnila, da bi prag dvajsetega stoletja osvetlila s sanjami o veselem upanju."
Tiste noči je takrat 31-letni baron sprožil revolucijo v sodobnem športu. Uspelo mu je obuditi legendarni starodavni ritual, ki ga je človeštvo pozabilo za več kot 15 stoletij. Zadnje grške olimpijske igre so bile namreč izvedene leta 394. Tistega večera pa so na pariški Sorboni sklenili, da bodo dve leti kasneje (1896) organizirane prve olimpijske igre moderne dobe, in sicer v njihovi domovini Grčiji, potem pa bodo v skladu z antično tradicijo potekale vsaka štiri leta. Ustanovili so tudi Mednarodni olimpijski komite (MOK), organizacijo, ki bo skrbela za izvedbo iger. Njen predsednik je postal Grk Demetrios Vikelas, de Coubertin pa glavni tajnik.

War has a way of really killing the mood. And people. Lots of people. Thanks to two mammoth worldwide conflicts, the Olympic Games have, indeed, been skipped a few times. The games scheduled to be held in 1916, 1940 and 1944 — all years when loads of countries were entrenched in World Wars I and II — were canceled due to the massive carnage that was being carried out.
