Resurrecting a position that was abolished more than 40 years ago, the U.S. Department of Transportation is appointing a Chief Science Officer for the entire agency, and has taken additional steps “to act on the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to address the climate emergency and restore scientific integrity.” And the Federal Transit Administration has made available $10 million in TOD (transit-oriented development) planning grant funds.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has designated Robert C. Hampshire, Ph.D., as Acting Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology, and officially as Chief Science Officer. Project Connect’s new 15-mile light rail Blue Line will run from Austin’s North Lamar neighborhood and U.S. 183 through downtown and on to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
The $7.1 billion Project Connect bus and rail transit improvement initiative is moving forward in Austin, Tex. Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Capital Metro) has been awarded a $900,000 grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for transit-oriented development (TOD) planning and anti-displacement efforts.
On the rail side, Project Connect includes three new light rail lines (21-mile Orange, 15-mile Blue and 9.5-mile Gold); two additional commuter rail stations along the MetroRail Red Line, which extends from downtown Austin to Leander; a new 27-mile MetroRail Green Line, which would connect neighborhoods east of c ....

Arizona’s Phoenix Public Transit Department will receive $1 million from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for transit-oriented development (TOD) planning at three stations of the proposed 1.6-mile Northwest Extension Phase II Light Rail project (station rendering above).
Nine projects seven rail-specific will share $6.2 million in Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grants through the Pilot Program for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Planning.
The funding will help “communities examine ways to improve economic development and multimodal connectivity, and encourages mixed-use development near transit stations,” FTA reported Dec. 15.
The selected projects are:
• California’s San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART), $350,000 for TOD planning at nine existing rapid transit stations along the Green ....
