지난 3월 동아제약 성차별 면접 사건이 알려졌습니다. 면접 당사자는 인터뷰에서 이렇게 말했습니다. “사회적 약자가 변화를 일으키려고 하면 ‘예민한 사람’ 취급하는 게 기득권 입장에서는 가장 좋은 해결방법이잖아요. ‘예민하다’는 말을 너무 신경쓰지 말고 오히려 칭찬으로 받아들였으면 좋겠어요.”
‘예민한’ 그가 온라인 칼럼으로 독자를 찾아갑니다. 20대 여성인 자신 그리고 주변에서 일어나는 일과 독서 경험을 엮어 낸 칼럼 ‘내 이름은 김쿵쾅’ 입니다.
※ ‘쿵쾅’은 단단하고 큰 물건이 서로 부딪칠 때 크게 나는 소리를 뜻합니다. 일부에선 성차별에 분노하고 성평등을 말하는 페미니스트를 가리켜 ‘쿵쾅이’라고 부릅니다. 페미니스트를 입막음 하려는 이들이 ‘쿵쾅’의 의미를 변형·독점하려는 시도를 ‘김쿵쾅’이라는 필명을 통해 유쾌하게 맞받아주려 합니다.
며칠 전 퇴근 뒤 친구 3명과 강남역에 모여 맥주를 한 잔 했다. 그 중 한 명이 얼마 전 남자친구와 나눴던 이야기를 해주었다. 결혼 이야기가 잠깐 나왔는데, 남자친구가 갑자기 흥분해서는 아파트, 신혼부부 대출 등에 대해서 일장 연설을 늘어놓았단다. 친구는 아직 결혼은 하지도 않았는데 벌써부터 싸우기 싫어 대충 넘겼다고 했다. 지금은 잠시 진학하려는 대학원 근처의 원룸에 살고 있지만, 나는 줄곧 아파트에서 살았다. 아파트가 아닌 곳에서 사는 걸 상상해본 적이 없는 나에겐 친구와 남자친구의 대화가 흥미로웠다.
신혼집과 아파트에 관한 이야기를 하다, 최근 읽은 라는 책이 생각났다. 제목을 봤을 때는 강남을 동경하는 한국인에 대한 비판을 이렇게 길게 써 놓은 건가 싶었지만, 그건 아니었다. ‘한국인에게 강남이라는 공간은 어떤 의미를 가지는가’를 분석한 책이었다. 주요 내용은 강남에 대한 분석이었지만, 나는 그보다 강남을 중심으로 퍼져나간 ‘아파트’라는 주거 공간 유행의 역사가 흥미로웠다. 그리고 우리가 아파트를 어떻게 받아들이고 있는지, 왜 아파트에 살고 싶어 하는지, 아파트가 누구를 위한 공간인지를 다룬 부분에 눈길이 갔다.
‘아파트’. 내 머릿속에 있는 아파트는 4인 가족을 기준으로 만들어진 방 세 개, 욕실 두 개, 거실 하나, 주방 하나를 가진, 여러 세대가 한 건물에 모여있는, 그리고 그 건물 여러 개가 모여 단지를 형성한 집이다. 그리고 이곳에 사는 사람은 중산층 이상의 계층이다. 여기에서 포인트는 ‘4인 가족 기준’이라는 것. 내 머릿속의 아파트는 이런 공간이고, 실제 거주자들의 모습 또한 크게 다르지 않은 것 같다.
내가 아파트를 좋아하는 가장 큰 이유는 ‘안전’해서다. 아파트는 여러 세대가 하나의 건물, 하나의 단지에 모여 살고 있으니 보는 눈이 상당히 많다. 그러니까 일종의 ‘감시 체계’가 다른 주거 공간보다 촘촘한 공간이라는 특징이 있다. 사는 사람이 많으니 내가 혹여나 무슨 일을 당했을 때 도와줄 사람이 있을 것이라는 믿음이 있다. 안으로 들어가려면 몇 번의 신원확인을 거쳐야 하는 확실한 보안 체계와 경비원의 존재는 아파트에 대한 호감을 높이기에 충분하다.
아파트가 상당히 ‘정돈된 공간’이라는 점 또한 아파트에 대한 욕망을 키운다. ‘정돈된 공간’이 안전성과 연결된다는 것은 책 초반의 인터뷰에서 알 수 있었다. 강남에 거주했거나 거주하고 있는 사람들을 인터뷰한 내용이 나오는데, 이 부분을 보면 인터뷰 응답자들 다수가 ‘강남식’의 특징 중 하나로 ‘정돈된 공간’을 꼽았다. 그들에게 ‘정돈된 공간’이란 ‘주거지역’과 ‘유흥지역’ 등 용도를 달리하는 공간이 서로 뒤섞이지 않고 알맞게 ‘분화’되어 있는 공간이고, 이렇게 분화된 공간은 안전한 공간이라는 것이다. ‘정돈된 공간’이 갖는 특징은 ‘강남’이라는 공간에만 한정되는 것이 아니라, ‘아파트’라는 주거 공간의 특징으로 보아도 무방할 듯하다.
그렇다면 이제 궁금해진다. 만약 내가 결혼을 하지 않는다면, 나도 아파트에 살 수 있을까? ‘4인 가족’ 주거를 목적으로 세워진 공간에, 나도 들어갈 수 있을까? 내가 부동산에 대해 잘은 모르지만, 한 가지 확실하게 알고 있는 것은 ‘아파트는 비싸다’라는 사실이다. 아파트는 비싸다. 비싸니까 들어가고 싶으면 대출이 필수다. 그런데 혼자 사는 여성에게 아파트 입주에 필요한 큰돈을 대출해 주는 곳이 있나? 결혼한 언니 친구들 말을 들어보면 신혼부부는 대출이 좀 쉽고 액수도 좀 크다던데, 아파트에 살고 싶으면, 그러니까 ‘안전’하게 살고 싶으면 결혼을 해야 하는 건가? 여성의 ‘안전’하고 ‘쾌적’한 주거 환경은 결국 누군가에게 의탁해야만 확보할 수 있는 걸까?
친구 커플의 이야기를 듣고 시작된 ‘아파트’에 대한 생각은 꼬리에 꼬리를 물었다. ‘여성의 안전하고 쾌적한 주거 환경은 누군가에게 의탁해야만 확보할 수 있는가’라는 질문을 나 자신에게 던지게 된 ‘진짜 이유’를 찾지 못했다. 비쌀 대로 비싸져 버린 집값 때문인지, 현 정부의 부동산 정책 때문인지, 여성들을 어떻게든 결혼 제도에 편입시키려는 음해 때문인지…. 아니면 이 모든 것이 복합적으로 작용해 ‘안전한 곳에서 살고 싶다면 누군가에게 의탁해야 한다’는 생각이 나오게 된 건지, 아직도 잘 모르겠다.
아파트에 대한 이런저런 이야기를 하다, 친구들과 함께 이런 결론을 내렸다. ‘아파트가 4인 기준으로 세워진 것이고 만약 나중에 우리 넷 다 결혼을 하지 않는다면, 넷이 대출받아서 아파트를 마련해 같이 살자’고, 대출을 많이 받으려면 경제력이 좋아야 하니 이 사회에서 ‘사라지지 말자’고. 그리고 우리의 마지막 건배사는 이렇게 마무리되었다. “야야, 우리 돈 많이 벌어 성공하자!”
