K. Prathapchandra Shetty resigns as Council chairman

‘Untoward incidents in the House hold a mirror to the system’
K. Prathapchandra Shetty quit as Chairman of the Legislative Council on Thursday, after reading out a nine-page resignation letter in which he said the recent “untoward incidents” in the House “hold a mirror to the system”, and seeking an apology from the people of Karnataka.
A motion to remove Mr. Shetty had been tabled in the Council and it was set to be taken up for discussion. However, he chose to quit and submitted his resignation to Deputy Chairman M.K. Pranesh. Now, senior JD (S) member Basavaraj Horatti is all set to be elected as the new Chairman.

Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the regional outfit Janata Dal (Secular) (JD (S)) on Sunday, December 20, denied merging amid speculation of such a possibility before the next Karnataka Assembly elections in 2023.
"JD (S) merging with BJP is a rumour and far from truth. It's speculative. JD-S is extending us issue-based support like removing legislative Council chairman Prathapchandra Shetty and the land reforms bill," said state Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa in a statement in Kannada in capital Bengaluru.

Karnataka: BJP-JD(S) leaders deny reports about merger

Amid speculation that the opposition JD(S) could merge with the ruling BJP in Karnataka, leaders of both parties – H D Kumaraswamy and Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa — on Monday said there is no question of such a move. Former CM Kumaraswamy however, did indicate that his party is willing to extend “issue-based support” to the BJP.
Speculation of a merger arose following meetings between the two leaders amid reports of unhappiness among JD(S) ranks. Kumaraswamy has also stated recently that he would have been in a better political situation if he had allied with the BJP rather than the Congress after the 2018 Assembly polls threw up a hung verdict and a Congress-JD(S) coalition came to power — Kumaraswamy was given the Chief Minister’s post despite being the partner with fewer seats in the coalition. His government collapsed in 14 months after 15 legislators of the combine resigned.

BS Yediyurappa, HD Kumaraswamy spike talk of merger, say joined hands to oust Prathap Chandra Shetty | Bengaluru News

BS Yediyurappa
BENGALURU: Days after BJP and JD(S) came together with the common objective of ousting Prathap Chandra Shetty as chairman of the legislative council, chief minister BS Yediyurappa and his predecessor HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday spiked reports of any possibility of a merger of the parties.
In a statement, Yediyurappa said there was no question of admitting JD(S) legislators into BJP or working for a merger of the parties and added that the understanding with JD(S) was limited to a one-off event to dislodge Shetty. “There is no occasion for any such development,” the statement read.
