Millions of Western Australians have been plunged into a three-day lockdown after two cases of coronavirus were recorded on Friday. Sky News Perth Bureau Chief Emily Evans says when Zak Kirkup stepped up to be WA Liberal Party leader he knew he would not win the election against Premier Mark McGowan. “He said this morning he already knew he wasn’t going to win this election against such a popular premier but they really had no other choice,” she said. Ms Evans said Mr Kirkup had been “working nonstop” since being opposition leader but his future in the role is based on if he keeps his margin seat. “He did say today that if he loses this seat of Dawesville that he will step aside from politics.”

Federal opposition leader Anthony Albanese visited the BHP Nickel Refinery in Kwinana on Thursday and will remain in the state over the next few days but, so far, has no public appearances planned with Premier Mark McGowan.
