Averting South Africa's political crisis: Will the ba...

The initial proposal in 2002 was driven by the need to address the social and economic prevailing legacy of gross disparities created by an exclusionary apartheid regime. So, it is worth asking: why now? Could this be a desperate attempt to appease the poor, or a genuine readiness to address the deep social divisions and widespread poverty that continue to bedevil the country?
Economic and political frustrations merge
The political unrest that took place over the past two weeks in KwaZulu- Natal and Gauteng, while unlike anything the country has seen in years, came as no surprise. Violent protests have been a frequent occurrence as citizens united against poor service delivery and high crime rates.

A lot can change overnight, but we’ll keep you in the know with the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Monday 26 July 2021.
Another family meeting, another change in regulations. We’re back to Level 3, and with it come more freedoms, like a later curfew and the sale of alcohol, among other things.
After a few good weeks where South Africa’s COVID-19 infection rate has declined somewhat or at the very least stabilised, Ramaphosa announced the relaxation of restrictions from adjusted Level 4 to adjusted Level 3 that will allow restaurants to serve alcohol again and bars to open. He also gave us an hour more to stay out.

OPINION | Abdi Ismail Samatar: A letter from Mogadishu: The unrest in SA should be a wake-up call

MARCO LONGARI / AFP
Abdi Ismail Samatar reflects in the recent unrest in South Africa and compares it to Somalia, writing that South Africa will not collapse as Somalia did, there are extraordinary parallels between the postcolonial political histories of the two countries.
Recent riots and the considerable loss of life and destruction of property in South Africa have caused alarm globally. This was also the case in Mogadishu, Somalia's war-ravaged capital. A few of Mogadishu's denizens who know that I annually spend several months at the University of Pretoria have urged me not to return there. This was surprising as I had just spent the past seven months in a city known for terrorism and violence.

Release him, nationalise everything in 14 Days

Edward Zuma, the son of former South African president Jacob Zuma, (C) gestures to the crowd to move back along with Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) members while they gather in front of his father’s home in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal on July 4, 2021. – On July 3, 2021, hundreds of supporters gathered to show solidarity for former South African president Jacob Zuma outside his Nkandla homestead, as the deadline looms for him to surrender to the authorities. In an unprecedented ruling, the constitutional court told Zuma on June 29, 2021 to hand himself over by Sunday to start a 15-month jail term for contempt of court after he repeatedly refused to give evidence to corruption investigators. (Photo by Emmanuel Croset / AFP)If ever there was an empty threat I heard it last week. A number of discredited African National Congress members issued an ultimatum to President Cyril Ramaphosa to release former President Jacob Zuma, nationalize all the mines, nationalize all banks, nationalize the Reserve bank. He must do all these nobody within 14 working days and nights. If not, they will do nothing.
