Stavanger Symfoniorkester: Kammerfest i Valen

<p>First, a preview of Beethoven's penchant for composing dramatic, tempestuous works in C minor, followed by one of Schubert's most popular chamber music pieces.</p>

<p>While some noblemen during Ludwig van Beethoven's (1770-1827) era had large orchestras, most preferred smaller ensembles. One such nobleman was Prince Karl von Lichnowsky, who used a string quartet for his house concerts. It was here that Beethoven's three piano trios, later known as Opus 1, were first performed.</p>

<p>The composition of these trios marked Beethoven's initial use of opus numbers and showcased his complete mastery of the classical style. They were noted for the composer's innovative approach to variation techniques and connections between movements.</p>

<p>The powerful and grand C minor trio, which we will hear in this concert, is considered the finest among the three Opus 1 trios.</p>

<p>This trio offered the earliest indication of Beethoven's penchant for composing dramatic, tempestuous works in C minor.</p>

<p>In the summer of 1819, Franz Schubert (1797-1828) and the renowned baritone Johann Michael Vogl traveled to the river town of Steyr, where there was a lot of musical activity. Their performance of some of the composer's songs, including "Die Forelle" ("The Trout"), caught the attention of Sylvester Paumgartner, a wealthy mine manager and skilled cellist. Following the performance, he commissioned a quintet based on this work, later known as the "Trout Quintet."</p>

<p>The quintet, with its somewhat unusual ensemble of piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass, has become one of Schubert's most popular chamber music pieces. Here, he integrates the piano into the music much like the string instruments. The quintet stands as one of Schubert's early masterpieces, demonstrating his ability to balance and blend these instruments instinctively.</p>

<p>In the Chamber Festival in Valen series, you will meet musicians from SSO (Stavanger Symphony Orchestra). They will perform music they have personally selected, creating a unique and intimate concert experience.</p>

<p>As part of the audience, you are invited to sit around the musicians on the stage or in the choir balcony, allowing for an up-close experience during the performance.</p>
