A TOP professor has warned the number of patients in hospitals battling Covid-19 could double to 3,000 by next week - describing the situation as a national emergency .
Prof Alan Irvine said more than 1,500 people are now in hospital with the killer virus compared with 800 during the height of the pandemic in April.
