Outgoing Rajshahi University Vice Chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan violated a ministerial embargo by appointing 137 teachers and staffers on his last day in office yesterday, giving rise to daylong chaos and clashes on the campus. After  news of the recruitments leaked around noon, a clash ensued between  leaders and activists of RU Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) who went to  the campus to receive appointment letters and a city unit BCL group,  which opposed the recruitments. The education ministry termed Thursday's recruitments illegal. According to records, 52 teachers and 191 other employees were recruited in the four-year tenure of Prof Sobhan. Several senior teachers of the university said the situation was created due to gross violation of the Rajshahi University Act 1973, which makes it mandatory to appoint the VC from a panel of three individuals nominated by the Senate.
