Call it what you will, but this iconic Kansas City-area venue has yet another new name.Officials announced Monday that Providence Medical Center Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, Kansas, shall henceforth be known as Azura Amphitheater. However, be it out of pride or stubbornness, Kansas Citians have for years continued to call the venue by its original name — Sandstone Amphitheater.Home to hundreds of landmark events over the years, the venue formerly known as Sandstone opened in 1984, and can host thousands of visitors at a time. The venue also spent a period of time known as Verizon Wireless Amphitheater.Venue officials said Azura Amphitheater is working with local government officials to safely reopen this summer after a long-term closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Current safety measures under consideration include lowering attendance maximums and additional safety precautions. “We are thrilled to be the naming sponsor of this iconic Kansas outdoor music venue," said Allyson Shove-Chard, VP of Marketing at Azura Credit Union. "This partnership allows Azura Credit Union to reinforce our commitment to the Northeast Kansas community and support an entertainment venue we are all excited to see open again."A number of big-ticket events are already scheduled for Azura this summer and fall, including concerts like Styx & Collective Soul, Jason Isbell, Machine Gun Kelly, the Avett Brothers and Yallapalooza. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Providence Medical Center Amphitheater (or Sandstone, as it’s known to most Kansas Citians) has been renamed again.
The Bonner Springs, Kansas, venue is now Azura Amphitheater after Azura Credit Union obtained naming rights.
It started as Sandstone Amphitheater in 1984, according to its website, and has brought fans memorable experiences in the 30-plus years since then.
